Does anyone know if the 1985 M17 ballast is lead or steel?
Thank you :)

Hi,
I am a new member of the group and live in upstate New York.
I have not yet ever been in the presence of a Montgomery 15, but I can tell that I would love to own one.
I am 59 and have been sailing since I was 14.
If anyone knows or hears of a Montgomery 15 for sale in the northeastern U.S., please let me know.
I would even love to see a Montgomery 15 "in person", if anyone knows of one near upstate New York.
Thanks very much.
Sincerely,
Henry S. Stewart

I replaced the CB pin with a 5/8" pin, stainless bolt, then finished out the keel with 2 part primer then 2 part finish epoxy (color match was "cream") from West Marine. I can never make my rig up time less than one full hour doing it alone. Just too many details to think about.

I decided to bite the bullet and pay the yard to get the CB faired and painted up also. This should be complete late this week and I'll head back down with the trailer and pick her up.

Henry,
1985, but by the time it was shipped to the dealer and I persuaded my credit union to finace it, the title and registration indicate 1986. Look at the last 2 digits of the hull serial number, located in the upper righthand corner of the transom, those digits indicate the year of manufacture. Also, the sail numbers of the early Montgomery boats indicate the sequence of building, mine was the 335th that Jerry built.

P.S. right Jerry?

Puget Sound has many, many inlets and bays and islands that are good for cruising and gunkholing, and sight seeing because it is situated between the Cascade Mountains and Olympic Mountains with vistas of several snow covered peaks, along with vistas of the Seattle waterfront and other cities. However, a navigation concern are the ferries, which are a principle means of public transportation in the area.
And no, I did not get a commission from the chamber of commerce for the above paragraph, I like the area, and live here by choice.

Hi, Steve,
Thanks very much for responding and for sending the photo of your boat.
It looks very nice and well-situated in a very nice marina.
It is great to be in contact with people across the country about such great boats.
I have heard that Puget Sound is a great place to sail.
Best wishes,
Sincerely,
Henry

Henry,
Perhaps your interest in M-15s extends to a recent photo an M-15? This photo of my M-15 at a marina on Puget Sound in Washington State may give you an idea of what an M-15 looks like. It is not for sale, I plan to continue to enjoy it, and it is located across the country from you, but I thought you might be interested in a photo.

Hi everyone - thought I would post a brief update on my progress (journey)
on the boat currently know as Ce Cee.
A week or so ago, I went to pick up the new Pacific trailer so I could get
the boat on a trailer and closer to me. This would make it easier to do the
work (she is in San Francisco bay area and I am in Sacramento about 2 hours
away). When we tried to get her on the trailer the center-board was stuck
down. After trying again to raise the CB (with more force this time) we
broke off one of the blocks the pulley cable runs through. So, plan 'B'..
time to hire professionals. I went over to the boat yard and got on the
schedule to get the boat hauled and see if we could get the CB to budge.
I ended up having the boat yard pull the CB. I had them load it up in my
truck and I was off to the sandblaster. I returned a few days later with the
sandblasted CB. I made sure we had it set-up that we could get a primer coat
on the raw CB within hours of the sandblasting (picked this from Sean's
postings on his site. Thanks Sean). I decided to bite the bullet and pay the
yard to get the CB faired and painted up also. This should be complete late
this week and I'll head back down with the trailer and pick her up.
The hull looks in pretty good shape. No blisters that we could see!
I can wait to get her in my driveway so I can start doing some of the other
repairs!

Hi all,
I'm looking to buy an M12 dinghy. I'm in Atlanta, Georgia, and willing
to travel. Please contact me if you have an M12 for sale. I can be
reached at <charlie(a)rentrof.net>.

We towed our M17 with a V6 Honda Pilot from California where we bought it to Tucson with no problem but there are no big grades on that stretch of I-10. We launched with a V6 Rav4 but the trailer hitch is much too low for long distance towing. Road trips are fun - go for it if you have the time. Janis ----- Original Message -----

I am wondering if anyone has suggestions/experience with hiring a shipping company to transport a M17 from another state?
Many thanks,

If you have access to a big enough truck (midsize) they are extremely
easy to tow. We bought our boat in northern Calif., bought new tires
for it, then towed it to north of Seattle without any problems. Plus,
it was a fun "road trip". Cheaper than paying a shipper.

how far are you wanting to haul?? from where to, i'm guessing, Portland OR.
as Pam wrote you don't need 'big truck' abilities. any vehicle that can handle up to 2500 lbs and a tongue weight up to 250 lbs is adequate.

Hi Jerry - I wanted to follow up and see if you received my previous
posting. I would like to take you up on your offer and buy the CB from you.
You can e-mail me directly todd(a)btbuilders.net or call me @ 916-616-6870 if
you prefer.
Please let me know and we can set up a time when I can come down and pick it
up. Hopefully soon, as I put the boat-yard on hold yesterday pending picking
up your CB.
Thanks!

Becky:
did you buy the M17 that was for sale in Estes Park? depending on your driving patterns the trip can be done in six/seven days ... maybe even five if you drive long days and switch with a co-pilot.
very good road between Portland and Colorado. i've driven all the Interstates you would travel in the past two years ... with boats in tow.
man ... if i could 'haul a double' next month i would helping you out.? i'm going from Golden, CO, to Monterey, CA, for the Cruiser Challenge and then heading up to Port Townsend, WA.
consider uShip - www.uship.com
or do an internet search for 'boat shipping colorado'.? (i just did this search and found _lots_ and received lots of hits.
shipping is a matter of how fast (quicker = more $) and what type of transport (enclosed trailer ($$$), flatbed ($$) or behind the hauler's truck using boat's trailer ($)).? the arrangements are not difficult once you figure out how much $ you are willing to pay.? i shipped a customer's boat overseas with no difficulty (couple of phone calls, couple of emails, and FAX).
if you wish to collect her yourself the M17 tows very well (good manners and not 'super heavy').

HI all,
I am considering buying an IDA rudder. ?Is it worth it? ?I feel like my
rudder assembly is weak and bends and twists, doesn't feel very strong.
?Would you consider the IDA (ruddercraft) rudder to be better?
Any suggestions and opinions are welcome!
Thanks,
ted

Hi Ted,
I bought a Ruddercraft Unifoil kickup rudder for my M17 this spring, and so
far have nothing but good to say about it. ?It's solidly built and easy to
raise and lower. ?The hydraulic spring piston holds it down, and, after
hitting an obstruction (like the bottom), it returns to vertical by itself.
?It replaced an older manual IdaSailer rudder, and there's no comparison.
?Ruddercraft is also a good company to do business with. ?Are you putting
it on an M17?

Ted:
my guess, as i can't remember from your prior posts, is you have an M15 ... and the old M17 rudders are one piece are one solid piece of mahogany.
i'm guessing that your rudder compression posts need to be tightened just a bit. ?if the cheeks are just a bit too loose if feels as if the rudder and/or tiller is bending. ?what is really happen is there is just a little slop between the three components (tiller, cheeks, rudder).
turn all the bolts about 1/16th of a turn and see if this helps. if not enough turn another 1/16th. ?tighten so the tiller can still raise/lower the rudder. this will better compress the cheeks and make the tiller-to-rudder connection more firm.

Excuse me....I am not sure exactly how to post to you all. I apologize for
the interruption in your communications.
Has anyone had especially good experience having a M17 shipped/transported
from another state?
Suggestions?

Rick,
Glad your new rudder is working out for you. I haven't installed your old
one yet. May get one of those new fangled ones myself some day.

Can you put a sail on the ten or is it definitely designed as a dinghy
only? I guess leeboards would be attached somehow.

The M-12 I saw last year in Missouri was a bit rough from what I remember. ?I already had 2 project boats, so I decided to pass on the M-12 project. ?
As far as the M-10 goes. ?I have one and it is definitely a sailing dinghy. ?It's a real nice sailing boat that is easily rigged and very responsive. ?Very fun to sail on a nice afternoon on the lake.

You can hire independent haulers/operators through for example uship.com
and similar operations - my brother had a trailer brought from VT to CA
this way.

Becky,
So, are you saying that you don't tow your boat now?
One mile is pretty much no different than the rest. Just more of them in a
row.
We used to tow our Rhodes 22, 4700 lb tow weight, with a Chevy S-10. Towed
it to Kentucky lake and back twice, 875 miles one way and never had a
problem. An R-22 weighs almost twice what an M-17 weighs.
I'd just hook it up and go.

The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that
they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprised to find the left
concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to
survive. ? Thomas Sowell

You can hire independent haulers/operators through for example uship.com
and similar operations - my brother had a trailer brought from VT to CA
this way.

George:
the Thetford Model TC 26104 Porta Pot is also known as the Thetford 135. this is the potti that the Glessers have in the '86 M15. i also had a 135 in my '84 M15.
as Tom wrote the '135' unit has been discontinued.? Theford is making a replacement (model 260)???BUT the 'exact replacement' isn't an exact replacement!? the base is not the same size and will not fit in the M15.
so ... do some Internet searching to see if you can find some remaining stock, or look for one that may fit (i haven't found one).
the 'wag bag' system is an option -
http://www.cleanwaste.com/demo/go-anywhere-toilet
the 'toilet', when assembled, will not fit in the M15's potti-space when the v-berth cover is in place.? this means you need to set up the unit each time it is used.
another option is to use the 'wag bags' in a bucket that is cut down to fit under the v-berth.? there are toilet seats made to fit on buckets and seal (do an Internet search for 'bucket toilet seat').

He went through uship.com - it is basically an online "brokerage" of
sorts for independent haulers. You indicate what you want to
move/ship/haul and from where to where and when and then haulers make
offers/bids. So I could find out exactly who hauled his trailer, and,
it's more about finding the right person for your needs rather than a
specific hauler that did some other job for someone else (unless they
happen to be a bidder on your job).
cheers,
John S.

Hi Jerry - I wanted to follow up and see if you received my previous
posting. I would like to take you up on your offer and buy the CB from you.
You can e-mail me directly todd(a)btbuilders.net or call me @ 916-616-6870 if
you prefer.
Please let me know and we can set up a time when I can come down and pick it
up. Hopefully soon, as I put the boat-yard on hold yesterday pending picking
up your CB.
Thanks!
Todd
