Went to Pine Lake with Louie & Sally H today and sailed for 2 hours winds from the NNW @ 3-8 K variable gusting up t o15.5 at one point early in the sail. Boat handled very well with new 4 part mainsheet set up just in front of hatch (same point mainsheet attached with yoke traveler system). Traversed both E & W bays of lake did some downwind sailing wing on wing and returned to slip and had lunch under tent at launch ramp site. Greetings Monty Gang, I'm dusting off my M17 and am headed for the Apostle Islands (Lake Superior) on Sunday. I am meeting a sailing buddy (O'Day 25) and we will be launching at City Marina in Bayfield on Monday. Steering Lines

One of the advantages of trailer sailing in coastal Carolina is that you can easily drive to where the wind is (or where it is not). Charts of local wind gradients show that for every 10 miles closer to the coast you get, the winds will be about 10% stronger than at New Bern. When the forecast for a planned trip to Core Sound, which is immediately behind a low-lying barrier island, showed winds of 14-18 knots, I decided sail the Pamlico River instead. 30-40 miles of barrier islands, marshes, & forests would ameliorate the winds to the 8-12 knot range. South Creek is one of the prettiest creeks in this area. It weaves between marsh & forests for 8 miles to the river. The protected sailing in 7-8 knots gave me a chance to re-rig my steering lines. I use a continuous loop of line through blocks tied at the mast & port/starboard toe rails to control the tiller, while I steer standing in the cabin. In light wind standing forward keeps the stern up, resulting in a little extra speed. Moving the forward block to the bow cleat improved the set-up & also allows me to steer while working forward of the mast (only recommended in the light air). On the Pamlico the winds were 10-11 knots. On the outbound run the steering lines needed regular attention. On the returning broad-reach they allowed me to fiddle with lunch, the radio, and everything else while the boat steered itself a lot of the time. Afternoon thunderstorms brought winds of 12-13 knots & a beat into choppy water. I find that it's difficult to fine steer with lines in those conditions. The best that I can do is use them to tie the tiller in one position & crack off the main a little until the boat will maintain a constant heading. Average speed loss doing that seems to be about 6-8% though. Round trip from Aurora NC to Durham Creek: 30 NM/ 8 hours Fionnula, M-15

Replacement Montgomery 15 Rigging

The shrouds on my Montgomery 15 each have a broken wire and I figure it's time to replace them and the forestay at the same time. Can anyone suggest where to get new ones made? I assume I measure my old ones and have the new ones made the same length. I also wonder if, before I get the new rigging, if I should check to see if the rigging should be tweaked in any way. I thought Jerry Montgomery helped with rigging and sold rigging, but haven't heard back from him yet. The boat is 1986 and I think is on its second set of rigging. The logistics of getting someplace for someone to look the rigging over could be difficult, but maybe I can be patient and maybe more wires won't break and fray. Thanks for leads and suggestions! I seem to have difficulty getting emails to Jerry directly, so excuse me for posting this here. Jerry, I'd like to get a rigging set for my 1986 Montgomery 15, two shrouds and a forestay. What do you need from me, just dimensions of my current rigging? Is there anything I should do to check mast rake? What's the cost and how do I pay? Boat "Merry Helen II" a Montgomery 15' on Pine Lake in La Porte IN I may trailer it to other inland lakes during the season. Sailed yesterday with friend Louie Hamlin who purchased my Pearson 23 and took it down to his home in Gulfport, FL Winds mostly out of the West variable @2-8 knots gusting up to 13 knots Max. Great Sunny day 81 deg. only 2nd sail of season as weather has been very wet. Plan on getting in many more but will have to be during week as lake is a frenzy of speedboat/skiers/skidoos etc on weekends starting on Fridays. Cape Lookout

After 21 days off the water I decided to make a day trip to Cape Lookout. Predicted winds of 12 to 16 knots were not perfect for sailing the narrow channels, shoals, bars, & barely awash islands of the route to the Cape but I couldn't resist that the tides would be favorable both ways. With 2 reefs & no foresail the M-15 was running 6.5 to 7.5 knots with the outgoing tide. After anchoring I changed to an intermediate jib (40% less area than the standard jib). Still dipped the rail a bit in the gusts. Local wind station was recording winds of 18, gusts to 21 knots. Tide was coming against the wind so experienced soaking spray on the in the narrow Channel. I plan to go back sometime in the Fall but hope to make it a 3-4 day/80 mile trip (with a car shuttle) from the an inland ramp down to the coast. Any East Coast Monty sailors interested? Fionnula 15
