M15 reefing and storm jib

We've discussed this before, but want opinions again. Scobie? Yesterday I was in 15-20 knot winds. 1 reef point just wasn't enough. So, I'm going to add another. Now, with 2 reef points and a working jib, will I have good balance in an M15? Or, do I need a storm jib too? I don't have one. How does the M15 sail on 2 reefed main alone with a dropped jib? Border Run II race

For those of you who are interested, Sean Mulligan and I just completed our second Border Run race down the SoCal coast in his M23 Dauntless. This was a 87nm course from Long Beach down to San Diego. We had a great time competing with the big boys and a favorable rating even allowed us to get a second place trophy despite having to sail in light overnight winds after all the big boys had completed the course. The afternoon and evening sailing was fantastic. We had Seans asymmetrical spinnaker up for hours on end and saw consistent speeds in the 7+knot range with occasional runs up to 8.4. A passing pod of dolphins turned to play with us for a while before continuing on their way and a flying fish crossed our bow on a flight of a good 100 yards. The sunset was beautiful and a bright moon in the early night hours reflected off the passing swells as they rolled away. The nasty cross swells Tom mentions were a real issue and made our night pretty miserable after we dropped the spinnaker at 11pm. If we had been able to fly it all night it would have been much better, both to steady the motion of the boat and to improve our finish time, but the angle of the wind had gradually become too far behind us and we couldn't hold the heading we needed. Wing on wing dead downwind in a miserable cross swell is not much fun. The genoa was poled out and the main rigged with a preventer. We survived till dawn and then had some better sailing into San Diego harbor. We trophied for second in class (1st was a Ranger 33) and second in doublehanded. Sean will be posting a report filling in the details soon I'm sure, as well as creating a YouTube video.

Daniel, question for you and for the group. How tight are you fixing your forestay to the chain adjuster? I used to make the mistake when stepping the mast of getting that stay as tight as I could, thinking at the time that tighter was better. I was creating a mast rake of a few degrees forward. In retrospect I think that had the effect of perhaps giving me a little more pointing ability but added weather helm with it. And I think it compromised sailing off the wind. Jerry chime in, but I think the M15 was meant to be a "looser" rig, and I have noticed a little less weather helm since I got into the practice of not tightening up the forestay on the chain adjuster quite so much...just enough for a little "play". Sometimes I wish I did have a backstay, as I learned sailing with Dave on his boat that a little tightening on the backstay created some "bend" in the mast (not total angle from the tabernacle--just some bend near the top) that had a remarkable effect on reducing weather helm on the tiller. Not an easy mod to do on an M15 with the traveler in the way, so I don't expect I would try. Keep those videos coming, Doc! -Neil

Hi Ted, Gail and I were knocked down in our M15 in Havasu. Winds were inconsistent, we were both on the low side to create some lean. (main & working jib) A gust came, we didn't see it coming (stupid, but we learned). I had one leg over the side in the water, Gail was on the shrouds as she released the main. We thought we were going swimming (embarrassing and potentially dangerous). Then the ballast took over and righted the boat. As I felt the change, I said "thank you Jerry". The injury put me out for the summer of 11' so I had to sit and look at it in my garage. Don't tell anyone but I'd just go an sit in the boat some days...dreaming of sailing it. My recovery has enabled me to sail...FINALLY! Yesterday, when I asked the main sail questions, was the first time I ever raised the mast. Today I believe I identified my problem...first, lubricant helped. Second, I ran the sail up on the stern side of the mast and had the line come down the bow side of the mast. It worked like a dream, hopefully it was rigged correctly. Today...was one of the best days of my life. I launched my own boat and kinda sailed (wind was 2-maybe 4 MPH during "gusts") I had my wife by my side and my Dad, the one who taught me how to sail, sitting right across from me. We did a little more motoring than sailing (had a few gusts) but the highlight of the day was a dream coming true. I love the water, I love boats and most importantly I love SAILING! I worked out a few kinks in the boat which made me grateful for such light wind. I have feverishly been refinishing the wood, added new cushions and I am still working on getting her all shined up and looking pretty. Hopefully Jerry is proud of me...3 years before I was born, my boat was crafted by Jerry and hopefully gave pleasure to many. 31 years later it is being reborn...fulfilling a life long sailer's dream and getting the much needed attention it lacked from previous owners. My wife and I officially named the boat, "Little Guy". It is a nickname for our miniature pincher and fits this boat perfectly. I am so thankful for sailing and the joy it has brought to my life. If it weren't for my Dad teaching me how amazing sailing was I'd be missing out on so much fun, relaxation and inspiration. Thanks for reading to the bottom. Hopefully it was worth it. -Ted
