I finally got back on Lake Pleasant for a very interesting sail. The lake is completely full and I was able to sail about 3 miles up the Aqua Fria river before I ran out of time. The gust were slamming down the river channel between the high cliffs. I took in one reef in the main and when I headed back up wind I had to roll up the outer jib. Got back on the main lake and the winds were 2 kts gusting to 25 kts with 90 deg wind shifts. What a wild ride. I am glad everything held together. I even met another M17 out playing. Thier boat name is Music and the crew also owns an M 17 in Phoenix but it hasn't been in the water for a few years. Thanks Doug Kelch Seas the Day M15 G #310

Doug, Was the M-17 a later model -Jerry boat, wood rails and plastic windows, red stripe?, beige hull? Anyone by the name of Pat C__________.? Owner or crew. Going sailing at LP on Monday unless - #1. too hot. #2. No breeze. Sounds like you had some fun. It can get VERY strange at the North end and up the river - I usually reserve that trip for paddling - at least up in the river channel. Take Care, Have Fun, Enjoy your new boat ! GO

Outboard Gas Burn Rate

I have a Honda 5hp 4stroke on my M17 and have been wondering what its gallon per hour burn rate is... For lake sailing I fire up the engine just to get away and to the launch ramp, otherwise, I rarely motor. I'm headed out this week to do some coastal sailing where I'll probably use the engine a lot more. Have any of you all checked out how much your engines burn at different speeds and covering quite a distance? Thanks in advance for any info. George J. M17 #600 "Rocinante"

Used Montgomery 17

I am looking at buying a 1985 Monty 17. The hull number is 383066371PMM. Based on this number can anyone confirm this is a 1985 boat? She is in rough shape but I think some elbow grease and lots of rubbing compound I can bring her back. Also, the trailer has one rotted board that has created a hard spot. The hull is slightly deformed at this spot. Will it pop back out once I float her? Mike Johnson Sent from my iPad

hi montgomery owners and fans! i am retiring in about 18 months. i've kayaked in se alaska and met retiree liveaboards who were exploring alaska in the summer and heading south for the winter months. wondering if anyone might offer an opinion as to whether the montgomery 15 could be utilized for this lifestyle? thanks. tom

Rick, I kinda went down the same road you did. The rigging on the 23 is LARGE for sure. I looked for any rust around where the rigging is swaged, swollen connectors, frayed wires (meathooks), bent toggles, and corrosion around where the stainless tangs are bolted to the mast. Finding none, I went with it. I'm not saying that's the right thing,,,,just what I did. I did replace the bridle lines for the split backstay as they were plastic covered, the plastic was cracking and rust stained. Needless to say, I did not replace them with plastic covered wire. Bare wire allows me to see what's going on better. I would suggest checking all those chainplate bolts and possibly reseating the chainplates in bedding. Mine were loose and needed it. Also, I removed and re-bedded the mast tabernacle. She's looking great!!! You're gonna be sailing before you know it!!! Keep up the great work and updates! Hi Robbin, I would look for the obvious telltales, rust, white powder like corrosion, fish hooks in the SS wire, etc.The standing rigging has been replaced on my M23, some by me, some by Dick Lane, simply because it was old, not because I found anything wrong.Jerry did overbuild the rigging, it's very stout. Hi George, The longest distance I have motored with my M17 using a Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke was from Isle Royale to Grand Portage in the fog. Gouge in bow

Montypals: On my maiden voyage last month I didn't get the boat onto the trailer correctly, so on the ride home she bounced around and gouged up the bow a bit on a bolt on the trailer. So, I have an area about an inch long with the gelcoat gone, into the glass. Not through the glass. What is the best way to repair this? It is below the red stripe. I figure I need to sand it, wet it with epoxy, then fair it with more epoxy, dry, and paint? I've never done anything like that. Or, can I epoxy, and put some kind of gelcoat on the spot?
