Our Door County cruise was great fun, even though rain and gale-force winds clipped our sailing time from four to two days. Two M-17 owners -- me, and Andrei Caldararu of Madison, Wi -- participated. On our first day out, on Sister Bay, conditions were still rough, with 20-knot-plus winds and big waves built over a multi-day gale. The vigorous sailing was very fine, and the boats performed very well! On our second day we enjoyed clear skies and a 10-or-so-knot following breeze as we broad reached from Sister Bay southwest to Egg Harbor, with a lunch stop in the lee of Horseshoe Island (adjacent to Peninsula State Park). Take a look at the Beneteau First 210 keel mechanism. _http://first210.org/technotes/new-keel-lift/_ (http://first210.org/technotes/new-keel-lift/) Search online - it worked in a similar but greatly improved manner - this may be adaptable. My father and I repaired one of the models you have in the 70's - the man we sold it to ran aground hard and tore the mechanism out of the boat - the Beneteau mechanism is much improved and a MUCH later design! I had a B First 210 once in inventory - LOVED that boat with some moderate misgivings - but generally a great little boat that sailed very well - nice interior. GO LB/GF! Hi Joe, I have yet to trailer my M17 down to the Keys, but it is on my list of things to do soon. Nancy and I have been renting homes in the lower Keys for the past 20 years, we will be going down to Little Torch in early March for two weeks. As I free up more business commitments, we will be making the jump to semi-snowbird status and be renting for a month (+). At that point in time, my M17 will be headed south with us. One particularly easy, out of the way, and steep ramp in located on Cudjoe Key on the Atlantic side. It is at about mile marker 23. Pick up a Keys cruising guide and start studying. Keep in mind the water is very thin in many areas. (fun kayaking). Hi Dennis, Just checking in to see how you are doing, hope all went well with the knee replacement. I'm doing ok haven't had the 17 in the water for the past 2 years, taking care of my elderly Mom and that takes all my time and energy. Hope to be back in the water next spring. Hope your family is doing well and best of luck selling the 23, just as an update in case you didn't know Nick Honodel passed away last September, saw him in July and we had a nice lunch and shared some good Montgomery memories Take care Gary Valetti M17 Bellerin

I used to own a web hosting and design firm and am comfortable with the inner-workings of web servers. Joe Maria Jorge told me about Seabird marina on Long Key as a great place to start my sailing trip there in 2009. They have a good boat ramp, and Iocked up my trailer in a fenced area so didn't have to worry about it not being there when I got back (though that was not exactly cheap). Spent the next week taking my time sailing by day and anchoring off at night till arriving at Key West. I found shallow (3 to 4 feet), small coves that protected against wind and waves to anchor each night. Very thin layer of sand over solid and surprisingly smooth bottom to anchor in most places. The danforth anchor did ok but I did set my GPS anchor drift alarm if it was windy. The prevailing winds in May allowed a great broad reach to a run all the way to Key West, but would have been a LOT of tacking and beating against the waves of Hawk Channel to return sail to Long Key. Would have taken way too long! You may have different wind direction options in January. I stayed in Key West Marina for a few days, next to John Edwards in his M17. It was great to run into another Monty sailor down there! The daily slip rental was $40, I think, but a lot cheaper than a motel and they had 30A service, fresh water and showers and laundry room. Restaurants in walking distance. I rented a bike for $15 and toured the town, otherwise city buses run right by the marina. Plenty to do and see in KW, especially Mallory Square. I took an inter-island bus that runs the length of the keys, back to Long Key ($5), picked up the truck and trailer, and hauled out at Key West. Only catch is lowering the mast and motoring a short distance under a low bridge, that is within the protected marina area. No big problem. Hope this helps and your trip goes well! George M17 #600

Re; New Bimini

Gary, I took a look at your photos earlier this year when i was in the planning stages of where to place a bimini, and really liked how you set yours up. Probably wouldn't matter all that much, but I was reluctant to change the angle of pull of the mainsheet on the boom by changing the bale location and wanted more headroom. Glad to hear of your report of no problems with mainsail sheeting. I also like to mess around with new ideas, which occasionally makes things more complicated than they need to be, but am enjoying the shade! George M17 #600

New Bimini

I've been thinking how to rig a bimini on my M17 for a while now, since I like to be out sailing for days at a time. The mainsheet just baaaarely brushes the front edge right now, but enlarging the holes and restitching should only take about 20 minutes.
