The San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau and Chamber of Commerce along with some of the other Island Chambers are sponsoring a "vacation video contest". The prizes are pretty darn nice! I had entered some of the videos I had made of our trip but figured that if you weren't on the trip they are probably boring, especially if you aren't a sailor. They also are not interested in any vid or pics from the Gulf Islands. So...I set out to make a video entry that tries to spice things up a bit and only uses images from the San Juans portion of our trip. The music..............................uh.........................well,.... hahaha, no, I don't have that cd, nor will I ever and I think that I can say pretty much for sure, none of you would either....BUT...it lends itself to a fast paced video so I chose it. I tried to keep this thing moving fast so that even a non-sailor might be interested. All the prizes for the deal are vacation packages. 'Jo and I are too far away to be able to take advantage of any prize. The video is a compilation of footage and pics from all the crews. SOOOO....if by any small chance it was to get awarded any prize...we are going to stick everyone's name that was on the trip in a hat (except Jo and I) and draw. Whoever wins it, wins it. I doubt it'll ever come to that because the video is more about sailing and not as much about the islands, but who knows. Mast Base Radius

Spirit is a 2008 M17 with the newer Dwyer mast and fixed spreaders. Because of the way the mast base is configured, the rig cannot be raised/lowered with the shrouds attached and tensioned properly. This was discussed in a recent thread and Gary H explained how he cut a bevel or radius in the mast base that corrected this flaw. I understand the concept and it makes sense. However, it also means cutting away a fair amount of the mast base that spreads its load on the deck plate. I think this SHOULD be okay. But I want to make sure I understand the project completely BEFORE I start cutting a chunk out of my mast so… 1) Gary could you please e-mail me a picture of the finished product? 2) Do any of you boatbuilders, engineers, and physicists see this modification creating a stress / structural / safety problem? (I know for a fact that there is at least one of each of those professions in this marvelous group). Thanks, Jim

Jim, while not an engineer, physicist, or boatbuilder, I have one satisfactory solution to the mast base bevel question. From Dwyer (I think it was) I obtained a cast aluminum cap or end cover. I opened holes for future wires, then put a radius on it with some grinding and filing. Once installed I was able to raise the mast more easily, and it gives a nice finished look to the end of the mast when it is down for trailering (as if that really mattered). Worth a try. Jim, T's and hats are a go. Prices have not changed enough to bother changing anything. I will be posting details tonight on ordering. As for Catalina...The group that i have gone over there with, The Socal Potters (and friends) do their trip every June. There is one of their group that want to go over to the Catalina Brew fest either this month or next, I'm not sure which. Beer isn't my thing so I don't go on that one. Hey Gang, Within the last 3 or 4 weeks I've been hit with about 5 unsolicited requests for another run of t-shirts and sweatshirts and then a couple more when I posed the question on the Trailersailor Montgomery board. I think it has probably been driven by all the photos of crew wearing the shirts and sweats on the San Juan/Gulf Islands cruise. When we print these shirts they are always prepaid and we print exactly what we have paid orders for so no-one (me :-) ) gets left with a closet full of Monty stuff. I refuse to wear a Monty or Lapstrake shirt more than 4 days a week! I don't mind doing it if we have enough interest. If you are wanting some shirts, sweats, or hoodies let me know. We might just do another run. I need about a 40 item order before the I can avoid setup costs at the t-shirt shop. Last time we did this I opted to use the US Post office one price boxes for shipping. I know that if you order a single t and live 50 miles from me that means that you pay the same as the guy across the country ordering 5 items, but it's still a good deal at about $10.00. Shipping costs have gone through the roof. It REALLY makes it a lot easier on this end too. So I would probably be doing the same thing again. Most of you will remember that there have been 2 different t-shirt designs so far. The original "Monty" T, and then last year we did the "Lapstrake" version as a celebration of Lyle Hess Designs (it was a take off of SCA's t-shirt logo with permission from Josh at SCA). I have a Uniden depth, speed, fishfinder on my transom. It doesn't give the depth until you're past and the speed isn't very accurate but it was cheap and is better then nothing. New M-17 Owners

Hello to everyone: We will be picking up our boat M-17 (Latitude) from Bob at Montgomery Boats in a few weeks. We are full of questions, but particularly want to know what teak finishes and fiberglass waxes Montgomery owners in southern Arizona have found work well with outside storage and a good cover. Speaking of covers, do folks have designs they like in addition to the one shown on the website? Finally, what experience have have any of you had with hand-held and/or transom-mounted depth sounders? Looking forward to hearing back from anyone who can offer input. Brad, Likewise. The wind picked up here in Roseville yesterday, so I decided to skip any potential Labor Day weekend highway traffic and chance the "bake 'n bob" at nearby Folsom Lake. Launched from the marina at Brown's Ravine (El Dorado Hills side of the lake). Glad I did. Lucked out and had nice steady breezes, as long as we stayed on that side of the lake. Hit doldrums in the center. Also amazing was that the winds on the lake were more or less consistent from one direction...what a concept! Although Folsom is very low, the so-called Hobie ramps at Brown's are all concrete paved and the docks are in nice shape and very accessible. No problem at all launching. Still plenty of water for sailing as long as one stays out of the "arms" of the lake, and that still leaves plenty of surface area. Black Butte Lake looks to be about an hour and 45 min drive for me and could b doable for a sailing rendezvous. Whiskeytown is just a little too far for a day trip but my wife and I are contemplating a weekend camping trip up there probably in October. Will be towing a tent trailer so will only bring our tandem kayak. But at least will get to scope-out some of the lake for future sailing. If you want to bring your Monty up there when we go, I'll let you know the dates when we know. Thanks again for all the tips. By the way I decided to order the West-Marine branded "mini" boom vang for $89. The catalog states that it uses Ronstan blocks so it can't be all that bad. Will be picking it up today... Cheers Neil
