Dear Montgomery Owners and Enthusiasts, It is official… The Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group Photo Site www.MSOGPhotoSite.com <http://www.msogphotosite.com/> has a new owner. I am not at liberty to give details at the moment; however I can assure everyone, the Photo Site will stay on the Internet and may include periodic updates as well as keep most of the content already published. You Monty people are so spoiled ;-} During the next few months I will transform the Maintenance and Modifications albums into PDF, making them easier to view, print and download. As for me, I'm going to go digging in the dirt for that butter yellow Gold. I have the fever bad. In part due to finding over 3 ounces in one patch near the Scott River in Northern California in 25-30 actual hours of work (took me three weeks to do that 30 hours). Columbia

Well I've been out on the Mighty Columbia a few times now.? Not as much as I would like but that's how it goes this time of year.? I'm not nearly so brave when it's just me on the water.? I pull in my roller jib pretty early and am wishing for a topping lift for the main so I could reef if need be. the wind has been mostly very light and the one time it picked up we were already headed in.? Overall, I've learned some and had a good time.? The bad news is (good for Ida sailor) when I was single handing the first time I forgot to pull the rudder and almost ruined it.? My wife normally does this while I get the truck.? I salvaged it with some epoxy but it is in Bad shape.? So, over the holiday, I'll take it to Joel and have a new swing up made . Anyone have experience with reefing the main with no topping lift.? is there a good sequence of action that makes it easy?? At your service Larry Pegg Pilgrim M-17 #55 208 249 0538

Hi Tom, Glad you got the procedure down, talk about "trial by fire"! When I read the post about no headsail needed in the NS27 to heave-to, I thought that defies logic. Bill, Years ago I has shown how to pan for gold in the South Yuba River in northern Cal. I actually found a few specks of the real thing! Hi Tom, I remember reading a post from Dean Wixom stating that "forget everything" you have head about heaving-to when it comes to the NorSea 27. He explained that with the cutaway fore foot design, a headsail was not needed to reach the hove-to condition. Sounds like your experience as well. Heave-to matey

Hey Bones, I too couldn't create that "Slick" to windward. I went back to the Pardey's "Storm Tactics" video and saw that they showed the slick while either laying ahull or when they used a drogue out to the windward side of the boat. I think that in both of those situations they weren't making any forward progress. I further notice that while moving forward in the hove-to maneuver the boat is always entering new water and that the "slick" was there, but behind the boat. Hi Connie, The high wind conditions creating the "slick" makes perfect sense. I have not been out in 30+ windspeeds with my M boats (yet). Chances are I will be heaving-to to reduce sail once I find myself in that predicament! I tell my non-sailing friends that heaving to is just putting your automatic transmission in Park on a sailboat. The only boat I ever had that did not heave to nicely was my old Cape Cod Catboat "The Old Cat" (see below for more info on CCCBs) since they have no jib to back wind. HI Listers, I sincerely agree with Connie, every sailor should have the skill to heave-to in the boat they are sailing. I find it surprising that when I'm out with other sailors on their craft, many do not have that knowledge and have never even tried the procedure. On my M17 and M23, I find that both will heave-to rather easily, however, I have never been able to create the protective "slick" area that the Pardey's and other big water sailors speak of. The boats seem to still want to make a bit of forward progress, less than a knot. I have also heard some boats are very reluctant to heave-to, aka the PSC Dana.
