Hi Grace, Great story; .... great first sail; ..... and they just get better as your experience and confidence grows. Keep the boys on the bow, or in the cabin so that you aren't dragging the transom in the water when all are in the cockpit. The boat sails faster that way. Happy sailing Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO

Hello Grace, A word of caution on your preferred boat name. I once named a boat "Bob." I hadn't decided on a name yet, but had to have one to compete in a race. I put the name on the transom with electrical tape. Thought it was pretty clever. Trouble was, about half the skippers in the race were also named "Bob." This led to no end of confusion when communicating with the race committee and other boats. Also, get a swim ladder immediately. It is not a convenience, it is a critical safety item. I say this as the only person who has ever fallen overboard on a NW Potters cruise. Great post, Grace! I can tell we're going to enjoy having you on the list. I managed to get my wife to read your story (which is a rarity for anything regarding sailing), and when she got to the "other man" part, she immediately identified with that from the opposite perspective and began nodding her head and muttering "Oh yeah, yep, that's right." First sail

After a week of sleeping and dreaming on the boat on the trailer in the driveway, I took it for my first sail yesterday on tiny, local Pinto Lake. Good thing the ramp wasnÂt crowded. Kept blowing the back-up and having to go around the parking lot again, to the great entertainment of the picnickers on shore. Fortunately, my husband who works at the little next door airport happened to show up, and directly inserted that boat into the water. Next thing out of his mouth was a reminder to put the tiller under the traveler while I was placing the rudder, so he was banished back to the airport for being insufferable. My boat, my learning. He sure knows how to whip a trailer around, though. When I remarked to the kids how lucky he happened to show up, they admitted theyÂd feared never getting out of the parking lot and had surreptitiously cell-phoned an SOS. So, what the heck, at the end of the day, we called him again and he hauled the boat out of the water right smartly. Showed up with hot pizza, too. A wonderful man! The boat is wonderful, too. My 15-yr-old son took the helm, and declared himself a Ânatural sailor,Â conveniently forgetting the one summer of sailing lessons, and the next summer racing lasers. But the boat, at least in the light lake wind, does have a way of making you feel like a natural. It tacks crisply, and has a big boat solid feel combined with little boat responsiveness. When my 12-yr-old son finished scrubbing the road dust off the deck, I raised the jib and put him at the helm, and he did very well despite the distractions of tree-lined-shore wind changes and fighting with his older brother. A Potter 15 showed up and there was great halloo-ing as we passed each other up and down the lake. We played around with weight and balance and each of us took turns for a small nap down below, listening to the splashings on the hull, and the thumping around of wrestling boys on deck, and we all agreed weÂd like to live on board forever. Next purchase: a swim ladder. Given my obsession with my new toy, my husband has taken to calling it the other man, and thinks I should name the boat ÂFrancoisÂ or ÂEmilio.Â In that vein, I think IÂve come up with a better name. Hi Howard, I am located in St Paul Minnesota. I was sailing on White Bear Lake. I appreciate the offer. Actually there is a regular on the Montgomery mail list name "Bones" who has been helpful and offered to go out with me. He is on a cruise with other Monty owners right now but we will hook up when he returns. Where are you located? Well today I put my M15 in the water for the first time. It wasn't pretty. I am not a natural born sailor. It reminded me of my days as a carpenter, another skill that did not come naturally. I have to do everything wrong the first time (sometimes second, too). It also reminded me of my trip to Europe a long time ago. 5 buddies and I were off to Europe and it was going to be so GREAT!! 48 hours after landing in Geneva, I was depressed and wondering why the hell I made the trip. I just wanted to be back home. The reality is different than the dream. But I managed to launch, sail and retrieve the boat without damaging it. The same cannot be said for the mast support mounted on the stern. I forgot to take it off before backing the boat into the garage. It is now doubled over. I really need some sailing lessons. I know it will get much better. Like that trip to Europe..after three weeks there, I didn't want to come home. Besides, I've gotten pretty good at the bowline.... Dan Mostue M15 #500

Hey all, I guess "funtigo.com" has been absorbed by "Piczo.com" Fortunately they took all the pages of our website across to the new domain. Dauntless and crew are homeward bound right now from attending the week long San Juan Islands Monty get-together put on by Larry Yake. I'm typing this from our hotel room in Utah. All I can say is WOW! We had a great time. Worth every mile of the 1503 miles from our front door to the slings at Anacortes. We took lots and lots of pics. Once we get home I'll work at getting some representative shots and a narrative of our trip as "first-timers" up on the site.If you've thought of doing this trip but haven't yet made it.....DO IT. Next year looks shakey but there was some talk of a 2009 rendevous. Quick synopsis....quite a bit of sailing...used almost every sail combination we had..sometimes all in the same day!, some sun, some rain, lots of interesting currents, stunning scenery, anchorages, marinas, wildlife, and towns, and just a totally awsome group of folks. Are you interested in Montys??? then this was the place for you. There were 15's, 17's, a fix-keeled 17, and three 23's, as well as a Nonsuch 26. M-15 Ballast

A ny thoughts on how much ballast should be in M-15. I removed 150 lbs of steel punchings during keel surgery. I am thinking of replacing with 300 lbs of lead. This seem to be the amount used in the latest versions of M-15 Captain Jim Sailing vessel Pelican M-15 #205
