Spinnaker wanted

I'm sure one of you guys has a symmetrical spinnaker for sale out there. Admit it, you aren't going to use it, and Tom is determined to get himself and Randy Graves and Larry Yake in trouble with it. Bones chiming in. My '76 M17 has the bolt and nut arrangement. When Hooper's Yachts had my swing keel out of my M23 three years ago, David, their excellent fiberglass man, constructed bushings for both pins out of epoxy and graphite which were then epoxied into the keel/hull housing. The stock pivot pin on my 1977 M17 was a 5/16" stainless bolt / nut arrangement that was inset into the sides of the keel far enough that the head and nut were not sticking out. It was badly bent when I removed it and the hole was ovalled, so I drilled the hole out larger, maybe 3/4", then filled it with epoxy and redrilled it for a new 3/8" stainless bolt and fiber locknut. The stopper pin was a flush mount 5/16" stainless bolt that apparently just threaded into the keel on the other side. This was also badly bent, and whatever it was threaded into (looked like lead) was stripped out and soft, so I did the same procedure as with the pivot pin. The only downside is that the bolt head and nut are not inset, but it sure makes it a lot easier when it's time to pull the pin to replace the pennant. As Tom said, this is with the older cast iron keel. The newer boats are different. Hey...Dauntless here checking in. Yep, I pulled the swing keel on Dauntless and replaced the pins. They were not tapered, just straight half inch diameter bronze rod. I replaced them with the same. When I reworked the swing keel the hole for the pivot pin was sloppy,so after fairing the body of the swing keel I drilled out the hole and epoxied in half inch bronze bushings. Two reasons,,,,1 to stop the slop and keep the keel from banging back and forth...and 2, I figured bronze on bronze would be better than bronze on cast iron. Realistically it probably makes no difference at all seeing as how Dauntless spent 20+ years immersed in warm salt water (had no trailer) and the pins, although showing some crevis corrosion, did not appear to be in any jeopardy of failing. The new pins were driven in by a sledge hammer and punch and seated tightly. However, after a rowdy sail on the coast I did notice that the pivot pin had walked about a quarter inch so the next time I had the boat out I ground down both sides of the pin as well as a small circular depression around them and layered some glass over both sides. I've had no problems since then. And Bill's right. There probably isn't anyplace better on the face of the earth for drying out a boat. With 110-115 degrees a common afternoon high, overnight low of 90 and relative humidity of under 10%, the summertime heat that I curse so bad each year actually worked in my favor. Dauntless was WET....very wet. I opened thousands, and I'm not exaggerating here, of blisters and made that now infamous decision to cut the keel open and remove all the wet and rusting steel ballast. She was on the boat stands and exposed to the dry air for 6 months. I don't know how long it would have taken to get her dry in a humid environment. I probably could have closed her up quicker and been fine but wanted to make sure she was dry dry dry. So far so good. I haven't seen a hint of a recurrence of a blister so far and hope I never will! If you need bronze rod to replace your pins you can get it a lot cheaper than I did from Duckworks Boat Builders Supply _http://www.duckworksbbs.com/_ (http://www.duckworksbbs.com/) I wish I had known about them at the time I was doing the project. Their bronze rod is only a quarter the price I paid. To anyone doing any of those jobs...blisters,pins, keel rebuild, bottom job......I feel your pain! hang in there. Hopefully you already realize what a great boat you have and that it's worth every miserable day of the job! Hope everyone is staying safe and warm. This is our time of the year to sail here in AZ. We've had a Montgomery San Juan Islands cruise the last four years, and two of those years we stayed out a second week and toured the Gulf Islands. We didn't sail to Victoria, but spent a couple days at Sidney and some of the group took a bus tour to Victoria. I won't be coordinating a cruise for 2008, but we'll be back in action in 2009. You're welcome to join us then. Maybe someone else will put something together for 2008. 2008 trips

Hello everyone, happy holidays! Are there any trips in the puget sound area planned for 2008? My wife and I are working on getting our US Sailing bareboat ticket this winter/spring so we can charter large sailboats, but I am itching to take our M17 out again. Have you guys done a group trip to Victoria or Vancouver in the past? (sailing on the east side of the island only please! ;-) Thanks, Rick

Hate to keep this alive, but I need some more answers. It appears some of the time when a pin is pulled, the replacement becomes a nut and bolt. Obviously it does not hinder a Monty. If you go back with the same or a re-made pin of the same dimentions, is it tapped back into place? Adheasive? Is the hole a bit recessed on each side so as to be filled in with fiberglass or epoxy to keep the pin from backing out? Although I did not remove the pin on my past M17, I was easily able to locate it. It showed as a dimple in the keel housing on each side. It appears it would have to be ground out, then using a drift punch tap the pin out from port side. If one was to remake the pin are they all standard in diameter and length? And, what material would be preferred? Maybe last question: Is the pin softer than the keel? Or, does the keel ever have to be bushed because of wear? Sorry... I'm just a pain in the butt!
