A few days ago I read it's against the law to dispose of plastic bags filled with potty waste in public trash cans...that was in the Florida Keys. In Marathon (Fl Keys) they won't a boat stay at the city mooring field with a porta potty...boats have to be equipped with holding tanks to stay there no matter of boat size. All, Just in the last few days I have been hearing and reading about the HUGE!! (that is, like twice the size of Texas) plastic trash depository that has formed in the central Pacific, to which most of the plastic trash dumped from the Pacific shores of Asia and the US has migrated over the past few decades. It's scary stuff, and definitely discourages plastic dumping, however small. I have been carrying my (full) plastic ashore and dumping it in the appropriate receptacle (known at sea as a head). I also say no plastic or dumping. But think about this...the hazardous waste created by mfg one fiberglass boat probably has worse impact on the environment than a whole gang of people pumping biodegradable waste overboard. I vote for NO PLASTIC to be entered into the chain. Note the recycling label at the transom of my boat. Plastic does not degrade anywhere near the schedule that we would like to think it does to make us feel 'guilt free'. Plastic and many other items kill bird and aquatic life. The bags as they are described are made of polymer and starch - the question here is -WHAT polymers and WHAT % of plastic - we believe the starch is biodegradable and benign, what is the impact of the polymer?? The chemicals used in a 'wet portable toilet'- formaldehyde, are most noxious and not good for much of anything - (my HS chemistry is failing me here on this one but I am not amused by the stuff) A biodegradable container for organic waste (human feces) sounds good to me, unless it is deposited in a sensitive area (low water movement or volume). I am not a biologist, chemist, microbiologist, but I am a cold water fisherman -- these (coldwater fisheries) are some of the most sensitive ecosystems, along with deserts. They are very near 'balanced' in an undisturbed state. Please remember make as small a footprint as you can - this will require some work on all our part to determine the least damaging action. Lets go, and find the least restrictive and earth friendly way to take a sh*t in the outdoors. Thanks, Gary O. 1. Thanks for the inputs on plastic bags. I will NOT resume my practice of decades ago; bags ashore and to the dump. 2. My weak and aching back likes ease and versatility. I can secure my topping lift at BOTH the base of the mast and the end of the boom via a bit longer line and jam cleats. I also lead my lazy jacks (port side only) from the topping lift to the boom; sewed to the topping lift, bronze hooks to eye straps on the boom, hooked to the end of the boom when I install the cockpit cover. Main Sail Advice

I've got an M17 with a loose footed main. The present outhaul is a piece of string tied to the clew and the cast aluminum fitting at the end of the boom. The boom is too short for any kind of outhaul on a track. Its all original equipment, but looks sloppy. Also, would appreciate any help with fitting a topping lift. I don't like the backstay clip-on type. Thanks and best holiday wishes! The following two poems were written by a very creative guy who used to post to the Cruising World Bulletin Board years ago. He always posted as Jerry TKG. Another two cents, plus tax, from the Ozarks: My last sailboat with a genuine head was the classic old Pearson Triton, and it was from the era of "pump it overboard." I have used buckets ever since, and my current M15 "REJOYCE!" (#361) uses the most satisfactory (and cheapest) bucket yet, a "5051030 bucket 8qt hot color" from the ubiquitous "Tractor Supply Co." for $4.44. It is fairly short, very robust, has a wide rounded lip at the top which is gentle to the tush, and the really heavy wire handle (not the least bit gentle to the tush) can be removed, leaving two holes in the lip which readily accept a short piece of line for a simple handle. It also works well for washing the dirty boat or washing the dirty and sweaty skipper. Mine lives on the cockpit sole, and keeps a wet sponge and synthetic chamois (which replaces towels completely). A serious question: For one-day sails, a good plastic bag suffices for each use, and I am experimenting with the large "zip- loc" bags for longer periods. BUT: I used to weight the bag with a few stones from the beach and let it sink to spend eternity at ten to twenty fathoms. I rationalized that my contribution was miniscule compared to the deposits made by fish, amphibians, game animals, hunting dogs, game and otherwise fowl (Canada geese really make big piles), cattle, bear, on and on. So, what is the consensus? Is a weighted plastic bag ingenious or despicable? Illegal? Or what?
