Split Line for a Double Reef

Larry, Now I got it and I did have port and starboard confused. That split line split diagram was a bit of a challenge. Rick, I was wondering the same thing about having to run reefing lines up both sides of the boom. It took some studying and visualizing to realize that once the first reef is pulled down with the starboard line, that's as far as that line can be pulled. It's tight through the reef point and tied off to the other side of the boom. You would have to use the port side line to bring down the second reef. And yes, you would want the padeyes or turning blocks on the boom to be a little aft of the reef point on the sail. This does look like a handy system and I may try it when I get a new main. Mainsheet traveler

Fellow M17 owners, I'm curious to know how many of you have modified your original traveler to offer a sheeting car with cam cleats. This seems to be a worthwhile endeavor as moving the stops in the stock track is less than easy. The self sheeting Harken car on my M23 works wonderfully, and I'm thinking about adding one to the M17. Later, Bones

Need replacement for masthead fitting

I have a M-17. Before taking it out I dropped the mast today and discovered that the masthead fitting needs replaced. The original one has a crack in it. Does anyone know where I might be able to get this fitting? Thanks. Jay

Steve, I like this system. Thanks for the heads up and the link. I'm planning to sew in a second reef on my mainsail, so I think I'll try the split line. Is it necessary for the second reef line to go all the way forward on the starboard side of the boom, or could it be tied off to a padeye like the first reef line is? Also, should both reefing lines be pulled down to the boom directly below the new clew or should that point be farther aft so it tends to flatten the sail when cleated off. downhaul lines

Christian: My M15 has two lines running from the bow to the cockpit on the port side as well. I use one as the jib downhaul and the other for the gennaker "tack downhaul" and spinnaker pole "downhaul/foreguy". rich cottrell
