The main event consists of three easy-going, friendly cruiser-style races on Saturday. One course is specially designed for new sailors. All right M-ers, If you all want to brag let me add my $.02 worth. Hard on the wind, on I-95 in North Carolina, my M15 was doing 70 MPH - by GPS observation via the open sun roof of the Jetta wagon; no water in the helmsman's face from bow waves or spray. Totally comfortable. But under more normal operating conditions, with water splashing out of the cockpit drain hole, hard on the wind, I see 4.0 to 4.3 knots in civilized conditions (where the beer can doesn't fall over). You're right Gary. The easiest way to skin this cat is just to make up a few of these gizmos from aluminum rod. Sorry I missed the fun too. I'm sure it was an unforgettable voyage. Tom: I think you can make such a slug out of either aluminum or stainless rod of the right diameter to fit in the mast slot. However, West Marine does sell them. I use an eyestrap, fixed by two machine screws to an aluminum slug located near the base of the mast in the sailfeed, to attach my boom vang. I've thought about switching to a bail, but I don't like the idea of drilling another through-hole in my mast. Anyway, I've lost the slug. I just saw the darn things advertised somewhere, but can't find them again. They come with two holes for purposes like mine, and a single hole, probably to serve as a boom stop. Just got back from the San Juan / Gulf Islands trip. I see this question has been answered many times, but many of us hit new speed records one day on this trip. We had 25 knot winds gusting to maybe 40 knots with some seas hitting 6 feet and getting real steep as they were against the current. We were running downwind. My GPS showed a top speed of 7.8 knots. Factoring the current against us, we must have topped 9 knots, maybe pushing 10. GPS

I feel as though I've been asleep like Rip Van Winkle for many years. While I wasn't sailing much, GPS became a relatively inexpensive tool, not to mention cell phones. I see a handheld GPS for sale this morning at Target for $89. Figuring speed sounds nice, but other than getting lost in the fog, what can I do with GPS when I'm sailing on Puget Sound in an area I know with good navigational markers? Dad had one on his fishing boat but he kept a log of where he found the fish or where he dropped the crabpots. Would I use one for more than measuring speed over land? And how would I use it? (Do charts have GPS coordinates?) Bobbie

Wooden Plugs for Cockpit

No problem Dan, just take your shoes off. As long as it doesn't get over the cockpit seats you should be ok. Seriously, it's not a problem, just make sure the scupper is clean so it drains properly. It's a good reminder to "Check the drain" when you notice the water coming in and it should be reassuring to see it drain. Hi Don, We sailed M15 #407 for many years. On our 15 the cockpit drained through the opening for the centerboard rope. That was the only place for water to drain out of the cockpit. . We did have water come up the pennant hole in rough conditions, but if you keep the weight forward on the 15 then the water would drain back out pretty quickly. My guess would be to move weight forward on you 15 such that any water coming up through the drain would go right back out. Topping lift

Advice please -- I want to put a topping lift on my M17. I have never used one before. Does one leave it attached at all times, even when under sail, or do you disconnect it after raising the sail? Thanks, David Hill M17 Grouper
