Chesapeak Bay Cruise 2005

Well it's another pretty snowy weekend here in VA and John Edwards email on the cruise in the FL keys got me day dreaming again. If you can make that Cruise you should do so as the weather is near perfect at that time of the year. This years CBC will be earlier than in the past in an attempt to dodge the heat. The CBC-2005 will start on 5/28 (Memorial Day Weekend) and run though the following week. I have some other commitments later in the week so I will be pulling out on Thursday. There are two plans at this point and both involve avoiding the Bay bridge on the busy weekend. Plan A - is to launch in the Rhode River Area and do the Wye River, Myles River and St Michaels. Plan B - is to launch from Breezy Point (4 mi south of Chesapeake Beach) and revisit the Choptank river. Both trips offer a good mix of sailing the open Bay and meandering up the many little creeks. Plan B has much less access to marinas so may save a little money. Please respond with your interest level so that I can work out the details. I am sending this email to both the Mlist and my CBC2005 list so if you get to copies you know you are on the CBC distribution. If you want on or off the distribution please let me know. GPS

I found a web site called Easy GPS www.easygps.com where you can download for free the software to use your computer to program waypoints into your GPS. Works great. A whole lot faster and easier than the scroll and select method on the GPS itself. You can also do a whole lot more with it, but that's the main thing I was interested in. Of course, you need a PC interface cable and they don't give those away. Larry

I don't think I would count on Penatrol as a wax remover. If fact, I would remove all the wax before applying the Penatrol. I doubt that they're compatible. Hey, Gary--- Got your template sitting here in my office, and thanks We definitely have "critical mass" on a computer-cut run of these things. I'm going to have to sort out the exact logistics, but I think it's going to be something like this: everybody will get 3-piece hatchboards that are slightly oversized for the hatch opening. Final trimming and finish work will be up to each skipper, though I'll hack the rain-defeating bevel between each board. Other details, like the proper thickness for different models and years, must also be understood. More anon. Cheers, John

Any good lacquer compound will work on old gelcoat. Sometimes (not always) the hull has to be sanded before compounding. For really bad surfaces I sand with 600 wet first...some people use 1200 and work longer. Then compound to get the scratches out (DuPont 202 is what I used in for fiberglass production work). Then use a non abrasive polish to touch it off. I normally use a commercial duty 2 speed 8" grinder with foam pad for sanding, compounding and polishing. The foam pad makes the job easier and more foolproof. I recently bought a cheap variable speed polisher/grinder on sale at Harbor Freight for $25. Variable speeds make gelcoat work more user friendly compared to my on/off tool. Attachments are limited but it's an excellent tool for the buck and great for hull buffing. Bill P.
