Hi Rich & Larry, I concure... I've used the "Boat Dock" on several occasions for Mercury parts. My fishing buddy bought his West Coaster boat from them. Appears to be family run business. Mom may be the one in the front, while Pop mostly stays in the back and takes care of parts and repairs. I'm not certain that they're that busy... but they always act like they are. Bones, There is a non adjustable bolt on motor mount that appears to be rock solid, extremely strong and bolted down well. However, I've not looked to see about the backing plate. Funny though... When I frequented the Potter Forum, there was discussion about leaving the motor attached and several people chimmed in to tell horror stories of seperated seams, large cracks, etc. Guess there are more differences than I thought. I read an article in Good Old Boat magazine that stated... It's better to have a smaller engine running at 3/4 throttle that to have a larger enging running at half throttle. Small gas outboard engines are designed to be rev'd a bit and will load up and run hotter at slower speeds. I'd think the 4HP would be just a little small for the 23? Then again if you're not fighting currents, it's probably just right. The current OB on my M-17 is a 2-stroke 6HP. California has most of it's better lakes on a 2-stroke ban, so when I get to lake use, I'll be looking at a 4-stroke to replace the current outboard. I'm just beginning to start a short list on replacements and weight will be one of the deciding factors. Bill M-17 SF Bay

If it's a dedicated towing vehicle, used for little else, you could keep a few hundred pounds of ballast in the form of dirt, rocks, gravel, etc. in the cargo bed for more traction. Hi Bill, I always remove the motor to reduce loading the transom fiberglass. The boat will get it's share of stress cracks and crazing with normal use. Is there a bolt on motor mount bracket? Does it have a backing plate? I do enjoy my new Yamaha 4stroke 4hp, it's so much lighter than the Honda 10hp on the M23! Towing with motor attached

The M-17 I just purchased has had the outboard left on while towing for the past 12 years. I cannot see any problems caused by this, however, I'll guess it's not a recommended practice. Luckily 12 years amounted to just a couple thousand actual road miles. '92 has a very solid motor bracket. Is anyone doing this? I would think it could cause separation at the deck to hull attachment in the stern above the mount. Bill M-17 SF Bay

More on towing vehicles... 4X4 or Not?

I've read all of the archives on towing vehicles used for M-17's. I'll be dry storing my M-17 in South SanFrancisco at Oyster point (mast up). The launch ramp is only a couple hundred yards away, so I suppose I could get by with most anything. However, the question is for you folks with 2 wheel drive or front wheel drive. Have you had any appreciable problems getting the boat out of the water on wet ramps? I truely hate spending money on fuel (Yea-sailboats), so I don't prefer all wheel drive. I'll be keeping my Honda for non boating road trips and will use the tow vehicle only for it's intended purpose. I've looked at a couple of Jeeps, S-10, Rangers, etc. I believe any of those with 6cyl. and auto, will do the job. Do I really need the 4X4? Thanks for any input. Bill M-17 San Francisco
