Dear Montgomery Lovers, I have a 1983 Montgomery 17 for sale. I live in San Rafael California, (S.F. Bay Area) The boat is in excellent condition, was recently hauled, and has new bottom paint. I have a Pineapple working jib and main, original jib and main, storm jib, lapper,and a genoa. The boat is very fully equipped, with stove , sink and water tank, portapotti, depth finder, autopilot, 4 hp Evinrude with power prop, bilge pump, compass, ladder, stainless BBQ, masthead tricolor and windex, whisker pole, anchor, trailrite galvanized trailer, etc. I am asking $6500 for the boat, I have pictures I can e mail if you're interested, please call 415-457-1026, or e- mail me at: willarddixon(a)mac.com for further info. Irv There was a guy on the TrailerSailor Bulletin Board site that was running a new (to him) CP-16 on the Chesapeak. Complained that the boat wasn't weatherly and had problems tacking into currents (slow boat - fast currents) Several folks made suggestions but the best was to sell the boat and buy an M-15. Don

M17 Picture Request

Hello All, I was wondering if I could call upon all the M17 owners out there to share any photographs of there boat under sail. I am working on a project with the permission of Montgomery Sailboats and would like to choose the best picture submitted to be used in the project. The picture of the M15 Storm Petrel was great. Hopefully the owner of this boat will give me permission to use the image as reference for this project. Thanks Mark M17 #103 p.s. My Boat is a flushdeck, and with only nine built, does not really represent the M17 Class. Otherwise I would use it as reference

Hey Bill, There is an inspection hole/cover on the inside cockpit area of my M17 to allow access to the transom. Thus, installing a backing plate was easy. I have an earlier M17 without the wet locker. I think the minimum size motor for the M23 would be a 8hp. I did use an older Johnson 6hp 2 stroke on my M17 for a number of years. It was OK, but idled poorly and was a rather dirty motor dumping gas in the lake. Not the "green" approach. Love the newer Yamaha 4 on the M17. Hi Irv, You ask the right question: CP16 vs. M15; and I have owned both. When I sold my MICRO, I bought the CP16 - roughly same size - but with an aluminum, mast and shrouds, therefore easier to step. I totally rebuilt the CP16, and sailed it for a few years, but...................... .......and it's these "buts" that get you in the end. 1. Accommodations were terrible: two berths extending under the cockpit seats. The whole front end was all useless space. 2. Center support post for the mast in the middle of the cabin 3. No storage other than stuffing everything under the cockpit seats on the berths. If you want to use the berths, then pile everything in the cockpit for the night............. (and it rains...........) Next morning take all the wet stuff and put it back in the berths again so that you can go sailing........... ........and Murphy dictates that what you want - RIGHT NOW - is the furthest in and the most difficult to retrieve. 4. On a reach or a run it sails nicely (but what boat doesn't?), but if you have to sail hard on the wind, the leeway is enormous; i.e., it doesn't like going in that direction! 5. After living with those CP16 problems, and finding that I disliked them intensely, I latched on to the Montgomery 15 as a possible substitute, and the more I learned the more I became convinced that it was a "proper" vessel, designed and built by someone who knew what sailing was all about and what was required in a boat. 6. Now after sailing my M15 for several years, all I can say is, the M15 gives you what you need and want: Good inside storage; sail lockers; good sailing characteristics; good berths; a portapottie. It is a responsive, elegant, excellently designed small yacht. 7. There is no comparison between an M15 and a CP16. The M15 is a proper boat; the CP16 is a failed attempt at being a useable sail boat. Connie M15 CP16 MICRO 4.

John Edwards John, we had a 1980 F150 with the big six for many years. What an engine. Bombproof, practically unstallable, and loads of torque down low where you really need it. Absolutely right, The motor in question... the 300" 6 cyl is also known as the 4.9 inline 6. If you've ever seen a Fed X or Air Express, etc. 3/4 ton van that's what they use. That engine is capable of hundreds of thousands of miles. Usually mated to the small bell housing C-6 (3-speed) auto trans. and the combo is bullet proof. Bad on fuel, usually about 10-12 MPG, but you'll make that up in the lack of repairs from the durability. GM also had the 292 cid - 6cyl that was also bullet proof, but discontinued it in favor of the 4.3 ltr. V-6 (great engine). If I could find an old van in decent condition with maybe 75-100K miles with the 4.9 & C-6 with posi or locking differential, That would be an excellent combo for a tow vehicle. For my use mileage isn't the concern so much as dependability. And the search goes on. Bill

Hi Connie, Yea that was me with the Valco stern & motor removed while out flyfishing. I really am not considering leaving the motor attached. It's just that the past owner of my new M-17 had done so for years withour any appreciable problems. I guess more than anything it attests to the quality of the M-17, not to mention his luck in keeping the motor. My past sailboat experience has been with a Honda 2hp which is very light and an inboard diesel. This M-17 has a 2-stroke 6hp. I haven't lifted it as yet, but suspect it will go about 60 to 70 pounds. No big thing for me... at this time. I'll be replacing the motor with a 4 to 5 HP 4-stroke. I'd like to go as light as possible and still get the oomph needed. I whole heartedly agree... keep the motor outa sight and outa mind. Bill M-17 SF Bay
