George, The Fall 1998 edition of the Montgomery Owner's Newsletter has an article called "Traveler Control for the M-15". It's a system the author calls "pinching". I'm going to try it and maybe you'd like to check it out too. (My boat, which is pretty much stock, has no blocks on the aft end of the toerail. Might it be those blocks are for spinnaker sheet and guy?)

My apologies to anyone who has e-mailed me; I've been offline for two or three weeks and am still sorting through too many e-mails (from the Tartan list mainly). ************ Congrats to the new owners and sorry to see Clarence has his boat for sale. Clarence, I hope all is well with you and yours. ************ Busca is nearly ready to go; a few odds and ends. The wiring has been re-done. Probably not any better than before but at least it's my mess instead of someone else's so it should be easier to diagnose future problems. Hopefully I'll get some pictures tomorrow. I picked up the new boom tent just tonight and will set it up tomorrow to check the fit. I gave the canvas guy some polytarp patterns to make it from. Pictures to follow. Hopefully I'll hit the road tomorrow afternoon for the trip north. I'm still planning on launching at Little Current on Manitoulin Island and, depending on how cold it seems (water temp in northern Lake Huron hovering between 38 and 39 degrees (brrrrr) I'll base my route on that. Water in the North Channel is nearly 10 degrees warmer. Air temps during the day seem to be running between 60-70 on shore, cooler on the water. Will be bringing cold weather clothing! If things look good, I'm thinking a clockwise trip around Manitoulin the first week and then the second week bumming around in the North Channel trying to avoid those rocks. :o) ************ Solar shower upgrade: I don't recall if this topic has come up before, but a nice upgrade for a solar shower is to replace the green push/pull nozzle with one such as is found on many sinks. The kind that is on a hose that you pull out to wash dishes with. I bought a nozzle with hose attached, cut the hose on the solar shower about an inch from where it leaves the elbow on the bag, then stuck the brass male fitting on the end of the sink hose into the end of the solar shower hose and put a hose clamp on it. Much nicer nozzle with one-handed operation allowing more efficient use of water. Getting back to packing now.... Tod

Found an interesting site to pass some quality non-sailing time... Go to www.calculator.com. Scroll down to find "sports", go to "sailing" and play with the calculator. The M-23 and the Nor'Sea 27 are on the calculator. The M15 and 17 are not. The info says some 1500 or so sailboats are listed. Have fun...

I don't know of an alternative to the jam cleat, but I'm sure there are variations that will work. The only v-cleat I'm familiar with is a fixture I call a clam cleat. I can't picture how one mounted on top of the tiller would engage the line, but I'm probably just short of imagination after a three day weekend. I'm pretty sold on the jam cleat on the underside of the tiller myself. today I tried an new variable speed electric trolling motor on a M17, on still lake, with no air, one person. I got the gauge to reach almost two knots, its a hang over the side wand type. The meter said it was pulling 47 amps and at full open it lasted almost two hours. It was very sensitive to position of the helmsman. approximately 745 watts per one HP, that comes to only 0.86 HP, two knots seem too high for so small a motor. A ready to sail M17 I think weighs in at 2200 lbs plus one person.

But I am very happy with them and their long-life performance. << I"m looking for radials... never noticed any swaying when I towed, even over the Tennessee mountains (nothing like yours, though). The tires that I got with Stargazer still have a lot of tread on them, but I'd say that they're at least 10 years (or more) old!! No sidewall cracks, but there's a slow leak in one, and the spare is a bias ply. Methinks I'll get a pair of radial trailer tires and use the good tire as the spare. I'm having eye problems, an dwhen the day comes for her to go to another sailor, I'd like to have a decent set of tires on her... Harvey/Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

Bow Chocks

My M15 doesn't have bow chocks nor is there any evidence that it ever had them. I have enough room for a 4 1/2" chock. I have found straight chocks and skene chocks. Does anyone have experience and advice on this issue. Thanks, Rick Langer M15 #337

Hi Rick, I installed the bow chocks on my boat. What I did was cut down the teak toe rail to about 3/8" thickness. Then I added a teak piece on the inside of the toes rail, wide enough to provide a good base for the chocks. Then I through bolted the chocks with backing plates on the inside. They were needed because I had to lead mooring lines to dock cleats at the marina; and for anchoring. Connie
