Downsizing to a smaller trailerable

Hello, I just sold a 19' trailerable and am looking to downsize to something smaller. What I'm looking for is something I can easily rig and launch single handed. Several boats have been suggested to me, one of which is the Montgomery 15. Is there any M-15 owner in the San Francisco Bay Area that would be willing to let me take a look at there boat? What I'd really like to do is watch and/or help raise the mast. Over the weekend and I met a bunch of West Wight Potter owners and watched them rig and launch their boats. While they're cute I didn't really care for the interior layout of the Potter 15 and the boat seemed pretty lightly built. Everything I've heard about the Montgomery 15 and 17 indicates that they are much more heavily built. Any help would be greatly appreciated. size and shape of underwater rudder

Is the size and shape of the rudder needed as part of the lateral drift control with the board in up /down position or does it matter. I have noticed in some modifications that some are making the rudder smaller when changing to a flip-up design, my rudder is deeper than the keel and equal to depth when board is down, is that the way it was designed to be.

mast tabernacle

Doug: It looks like I can have three holes drilled through the new tabernacle and organizer plate to match the existing holes drilled through the cabin top. I'll have to remove the current tabernacle first, to be almost certain. Since I have to take it to a machinist anyway, it might be easier to go with three holes. Are you waiting for the new tabernacle plate? If so, I don't intend to do anything until I hear from you. Clarence: I intend to buy a "uni-bit" first chance I get. Thank's. I appreciate your help. Dwyer Mast

Received the mast tabernacle, pin assembly, and small halyrd organizer plate today for my M15. I'll have to have 4 new holes drilled in the organizer plate to match the tabernacle plate. Otherwise, it looks like it will work well. Oh, I'll also have to drill a new hole into the mast for the pin assembly, as Bob advised. Rich Cottrell "Really"

Funny! ( I mean the comment about a post-50's guy and the limp hanging thing.) I am 63, and refuse to comment on the applicability of that comment as far as I am concerned. On another subject, the cockpit drain on my M-17 runs from the bottom rear of the cockpit, through an "S" shaped rubber hose, and out the bottom of the boat at the rear of the keel. Although I keep a rubber stopper handy in case of a failure of the hose or clamps, I am thinking of running a new cockpit drain from the bottom of the cockpit to the transom, similar to the new M-17 but minus the locker. I probably will use some sort of bronze tubing and glass it in. Has anybody done this modification, and if not, does anybody have any better ideas on this project? Hi Tom, (In my opinion) The weak spot of the M-17 is the low bridgedeck. If one were swamped, the easiest place for the water to flood is the cabin. Can't say I've heard of that happening to a M-17. But, it's logical. I want to do the same project you're mentioning. And I'll change to a three piece campanionway board, so I can peg the bottom one in. By doing so, I'll be creating a large tub of water to drain out... and quickly. If you get involved with this. Be sure to take lots of pics. I will also, but you'll probably be first to get it done. Hi Craig, This weekend I tried a plan with two jib stays but they were two close to each other and the jib snaps from one sail would get caught on the second jib, but once up the boat steered it self under almost all conditions. I need a bigger top 3/4 tang and some better arrangement on the bottom. The self steering was excellant approximately 25 degrees each side of the down hill run , by just adjusting one jib. By the way I solved the self rescue problem I had asked the group about . I got five air bags , with a total volume of twenty two cubic feet of air, and paint ball cartridges for instant inflation. Hope my calcs are good but that comes to a little over 1400 lbs of lift. I would only need to inflate if that weird accident should happen and get run down by a stink pot or rammed a hole in the side by hitting some big pointy object. In that way I need not carry a dinghy. My philosophy is don't go further than your cell phone range , unless you will take be able to take care of your self. this is a great group to get information from ----- Original Message ----- From: Craig F. end cap of 17 boom

can not find anything in archives on this subject, , but there is a hole in the end of the boom cap, is this designed for a boom support to hold to the backstay, there is nothing in the hole right now and it does not look like there ever was.. If possible I would cut the rivets, put a tang and a lock nut to hold it and then clip it to the backstay for a overnight mosquito net while anchored.
