For what its worth I will pass this info along. I got it from a friend of mine who used to be the head warranty mgr. for OMC International (commercial division outboards) for South America, Bahamas and Bermuda. He flew all over the place inspecting engines for 10 yrs...and is a BSME, PE and MBA. This is dated back to mid 90s just before OMC tanked. OMC only used 100:1 mix for a couple of years and went back to 50:1 because of corrosion problems. They found that people who let their engines sit for months between use were the ones having warranty work. 100:1 doesn't leave enough film on the internal parts to protect long storage. A 100:1 engine is identical to a 50:1 engine. A typical 80s/90s vintage OMC (evinrude/johnson) only needs 150:1 lube at full throttle and 300:1 at idle. There is a huge safety factor in the mfg. specs. He also said it didn't mater which brand you used as long as it was TWC rated. Concerning synthetic...there was no detection of better wear but was cleaner running...so you can go longer between decarbs. He said synthetic was not cost effective for the avg. boater but to use it if racing because it will turn faster. Synthetic does not cling well to internal parts so fogging is suggested for long term storage in humid climates. Here in Florida that means 2 months. Bill

New stuff on MSOG, mast raising, patching mast holes

I've added Scott Grometer's excellent directions on trailer wheel maintenance under How-To. Also, I finally got around to indexing the articles for the MON. All those pages were kinda difficult to wade through without a table of contents. So now each issue has article titles listed and links to them. I've also added a link to the next page at the bottom of each MON page. Additionally, Dave Peters supplied the early archive files of the old listserver, so we now have messages back to 1996, almost 15,000 in all. You can find information much faster through this mailing list message archive search than many other ways. Practically everything you could possibly want to know is in there, a few times. There is a discussion on mast raising systems on the MSOG at http://msog.org/how-to/how-to.cfm After looking in the archives and not finding anything, does anyone know the best stuff to plug a couple of quarter-inch holes drilled into the mast? Looking forward to meeting you at CBC 2003. * Mast Raising. I bought an telescoping mast crutch called "Mast Up." It is overkill for a 15 and maybe for a 17. However, it looks much nicer than my homemade crutch and roller. May be useful for single handed mast raising. I tried the Coleman 2-man inflatable raft from the local Wal-Mart. PVC, 370 lb. capacity. As with other 2-man inflatables this should hold one adult in calm water. I could not resist the $20 price. A hand pump is $10, which took me five minutes to inflate the craft. Worked up a little perspiration. A rechargeable, battery operated pump is $30. Takes about a minute to fill. No sweat. The charger is AC. Not sure how long the battery will last. There is a warning to let the pump cool if in use for more than ten minutes. They also make AC and 12 volt powered pumps. Coleman has a propriety valve design which leaked a little when I unhooked the hand pump. The rechargeable pump quickly disengages without so much as a hiss. Very well thought out design. Either pump can be connected to deflate the raft, another clever idea. Deflating is much quicker than inflating. The hose of the hand pump plugs directly into the raft. This hose has two other adapters permanently tethered. The rechargeable model uses a detachable adapter for the raft. That will be a challenge to keep up with. They should have included a lanyard or storage compartment. The pumps work only on water toy type inflatables, not inner tubes or footballs. It holds air. 2-Cycle Oil Recommendation

Hi Randy.. I use a biodegradable oil in my Seagulls, mainly because they require a high gas-oil mix in the older engine (25-1) My two newer engines (1989 & 1992) are the QB series that recommend a 50-1 mix. When I bought Stargazer, she wore a 1987 Evinrude 8hp Yachtwin, longshaft. The owners manual recommended 100-1 gas-oil mix. I called Evinrude tech support to order a service manual and info on the alternator that was in it. We also talked about the gas-oil mix, and they recommended that I use a 50-1 mix, as they were getting a lot of warranty repairs when 100-1 was used. I compromised with a 64-1 mix...2 oz. in a gallon. Their website also touted their synthetic oil, and I bought a gallon (only size available !!!). After 5 years, I still have over 2 quarts left...and I use it in several other 2 cycle garden engines as well ! Penzoil makes a synthetic...West Marine only sells it in a gallon size, but after relating how Mobil 1 saved the engine of my Pathfinder, I have little trouble selling it over oil costing a half as much. ( I work P/time at W-M). I've seen the Penzoil synthetic at WalMart in quarts, as well as a 100% synthetic lower gear oil that I'll use instead of the synthetic blend that I now use. Perhaps I'm going a bit overboard in both gas-oil and tranny oil, but I use so little that the cost isn't a factor....and I love my Seagulls like I love Stargazer<GG> I've thought about Amsoil, for both car and boat use, but would have had to order from the factory as there was no dealer close by. Do check into the 100-1 mix. My Seagull manual suggested breaking it in at a 25-1 ratio for the first 10 hours. I've talked to 2 Seagull sales and service shops and they suggest I not use the 50-1 mix. Perhaps they're mired in the 10-1 and 25-1 ratios of the original and mid-life models, but I again compromise by adding a tad more oil (3 oz instead of 2.6 oz.) Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

Hi George, The question of trailer brakes is a function of how big, and what is the towing capacity of your tow vehicle? The next question is: What are the State towing weight limits at which point the trailer needs trailer brakes? As for the trip, my recommendation is that you make sure that you carry tools and a jack so that you can change a trailer wheel (does the trailer come with a spare tire / wheel? - if it has a spare, that take a lot of sweat out of a first trip). Also a lug wrench with a long handle (possibility of rusted bolts). A can of WD40 to spray rusted bolts. Don't forget to take along some chocks to put under the trailer wheels in case you disconnect the trailer from the tow vehicle. A volt/ohm meter for checking trailer wiring and good grounds - also spare trailer light bulbs. They are always breaking. Some wire if your have to repair a trailer wiring harness. AND MOST IMPORTANT: What is the size of the receiver on the trailer? - and do you have the proper sized trailer ball on your vehicle? Happy retrieving Connie

I've read it several times, and have it printed out in the package of stuff that WILL be there when the engine goes back in. (Still waiting for the right mounts!). When I first bought Dolphin I realigned the engine after replacing the cutless bearing and stern tube packing -- my way was harder, and I'm actually looking forward to trying it again. Do you know if any one has done this? The haul is 2000 mi. fortunately the present owner has agreed as part of the sale to bring it half way. Our plan is to make the exchange at Lake Carlyle in IL just out side of ST Louis. I am planning on moving the traveler to the position you described in your boat as I believe it is more convenient when single handling.
