galley shelf

If there was anyone besides Larry Yake and Ron & Cathryn Goodspeed that wanted the galley model shelf, please let me know; I may have accidently deleted your message. The parts required 11x17 paper to trace, and even then when I photocopy them the edges may get clipped a wee bit. Because they are that large and probably most people only have printers that take 8 1/2 x 11 I'll just copy them and mail them directly. Ron, I have your address; Larry and anyone else wanting one, could you e-mail me yours ( htmills(a)bright.net )? Thanks, Tod

Hi Bill, No, I am using the 2 HP Honda on my Montgomery 15. I sold the ComPac 16 years ago. That had the 2 HP Suzuki which was a great engine / boat combination. At half to 3/4 throttle the Suzuki pushed the ComPac 16 at hull speed - depending on load. I found the 2 HP Suzuki (or probably any 2 HP outboard) more than enough power for the ComPac. Connie

Craig, Most of the little OMCs from 8hp down are very quiet (except for the 2hp). They have large exhaust baffles. I've had several and they can be found in long shaft sailer version with generator. If you can find a used one they last forever with nominal care. Bill P.

Hi Bille... I'll go along with Connie.... the 2hp will be fine to get in and out of a slip, and in modest waters. I once used a 36 pound thrust trolling motor to get in/out of the slip while my Evinrude was being repaired. I didn't get out into the open waters of Lake Lanier... what I'd call modest waters, but it didn'thave the umpff to push it up the trailer like the Evinrude did...or even my 3hp Seagull. I'd consider where you sail and where you may _want _ to sail then decide. If you're running against tides or bucking high waves, 4 or even 6 hp may be necessary. The previous owner of Stargazer sailed in the Gulf of Mexico off Ft. Myers, Fla. He had a 8hp.... perhaps a bit of overkill, but it's the same size and weight as the 6hp. model. Just a note to let everyone know that I have sold Alina to Jerry and Valaree, a terrific couple in Washington state. I'm confident that Alina is going to have an excellent new home, and wonderful new sailing adventures with her new owners. Although the specs in the sales brochures don't show it, my motor does have a clutch.<< Seagulls have been modified by the factory, a knowledgable dealer...or even the owner himself. They're basically a simple engine. The clutch model should be GFPC 2310 BB7, so it may have been added later. My M-55, a 1992 model, has TSEFPC 358 A12 on it...yet it is a long shaft model, modified by the dealer/servicer that I bought it from. It should be stamped TSEFPCL. Personally, I think that they are great engines, but like old English MG's and Triumph motor cars...they're not for everybody. Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

M 15 Maiden Voyage

Finally took Carolyn J out for the first time this weekend. Despite a thunderstorm forecast both Saturday and Sunday nothing happened but beautiful days. I think the weather folks are getting as sensationalist as most other media for the sake of attention grabbing. From now on I will just choose to look at the sky and trust my own judgement. The M 15 performed far above my expectations. With winds at 5 to 8 or 9 with 3 people aboard she sailed nicely. With 2 aboard I reached 4.3 knots on a broad reach in less than 10 knot winds. A light but communicative helm, practically no leaway that I expected and have experienced on other small boats. I could let go the tiller for a little while without her walking off in her own direction. I believe Lyle Hess and Jerry Montgomery spoke with God when this boat was in design stages. A few of the dumb things I did. I left the centerboard down when I pulled her back on her trailer after the first day of sailing ( I will blame that on the beer). Wasn't a problem until the next day when we tried to launch her. Took a few minutes to realize what was going on. She really likes staying on the trailer with the board down. I have a great Honda 2HP 4 stroke. Ran great the first day after I remembered to turn the choke off. Before that I had some choice comments about the engine. The second day was even better. Got her started. She ran for a minute and then died. I then tried to start the beejesus out of her and nothing. I then realized I had left the vent cap closed. Opened it and pulled and pulled and pulled on the starter rope. Nothing. The wind was working so we we sailed out but I was still puzzeled. Honda's just don't act this way. After a few minutes of pondering I realized I had left the fuel valve off. Turned it on she started right up! As is often the case; it's not the boat but the skipper. A few questions. I want a bigger headsail and I am thinking of adding a asymmetrical spinnaker as well. Those of you who have experience with different sails on your M 15's please let me know what you think, ie sizes, etc. I can't wait to sail her in heavy air to see how she behaves.
