Hi Steve, Yes it's quite flat. My guestimate is that it is about 1/2 inch high. If you use cockpit cushions, you'll never notice the height difference............ Of course, the hatch is all the way aft, and when I'm sailing I like to sit as far forward in the cockpit as I can, so I am sitting on the regular cockpit surface: on a cushion! Connie

Hi Bill, How can you live with so little actual storage space? My M15 has a deep sail locker on the Port side - followed by my rectangular hatch for access to the inside of the transom. The hatch that I installed has positive locking. I can't put a hasp on it, but it has a 90 degree turn-to-lock fastener, and there is no danger of it ever opening inadvertently. I had the shallow locker on the Starboard side, and I cut around the upper lip of the shallow locker and made it removable, to make use of the storage space that was under the locker. Big improvement! I too keep the weight out of the stern. All I store all the way aft are the light bulky items: fenders; cleaning bucket and materials. Heavier items, like anchor, chain and rode live as far forward in the Port sail locker as they will go. The aim is to keep the transom from dragging through the water when sailing. To improve the trim of the boat, I am going to install a small battery in the forward compartment, where my big anchor resides. This will give me unlimited power for my CD player and for running the GPS as a knot meter all the time. I know I could buy a ton of AA batteries for the cost of the battery and the electrical panel, but what the heck, it's only money........... and I buy convenience! Connie

My only question about your horizontally installed hatch, Connie, is: what is it like to sit on? Or do you? Doug, Electrical and Electronic components are often very different. Sounds like you were shopping in the Electrical section? If you have a local electronics store, they would be a good bet and would probably know exactly what you are talking about and what to suggest. Maybe even Radio Shack. Another though is the hardware section of a store like Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes. You-know the little bins and grab bags that have all those odd & hard to find parts for your screen door? Yes, that section! A couple of replies mentioned using a gromet and exiting the mast before making the electrical connection. I am not sure a gromet would stand up to the UV, I think they would crack and crumble. But if you use a gromet you would need to secure the cable from pulling back through the hole. You can do this with a cable tie. But again cable ties tend to break down when exposed to the sun for any length of time. The term "strain relief" if very generic. The devices I am thinking of come in plastic coated metal and nylon. The look like a letter "P" with the tail of the "P" spreadable to pass the cable through, and the tail of "P" is where the screw passes though to mount and create a friction fit over the cable that rests in the circular opening of the "P". Hi Bill, After reading all the stories about the problems of installing a lift motor mount in an M15, I decided to do it the easy way and cut an access hole and install a port. What I did was install a rectangular access hatch between the aft end of the sail locker and the end of the cockpit. It gave me excellent access to the area of the stern where I installed a backing plate (plywood) and then the Fulton lift motor mount. >From reading other postings, a smaller round hatch would probably have done the job as well, however: how do you install a backing plate through a 8 inch diameter hole? Isn't it a lot easier to work through a larger area? My large hatch now give me a second sail locker for access to items stuck all the way aft. I keep my fenders there; my cleaning bucket and cleaning materials; and I find it a big improvement, because formerly all those items lived in the same space but were hard to get. Now it is just open the lid and reach in.............. I don't remember exactly whose hatch I picked, but WEST Page 467 - Bomar Inspection Hatches - Model 411597 10 1/4" x 14 1/4" flange OD will give you the idea. My feeling was: if I am going to have to cut an access hole to do the motor mount installation, then let's increase utility by making it another sail locker lid. Connie M15 #400 LEPPO

In an earlier posting to my electrical installation question,it was strongly suggested that I use a strain relief device at the Masthead to hold the electrical wiring and the coax for the antenna. I went to an electrical store and asked for the strain relief device they would use to attach a cable to a pole. The only thing they offered was a basket strain relief with an electrical box connector on the end. I can figure out a way to use it but there must be something made for the task. Hi Doug, NO, No, no. The rectangular hatch was mounted on the top surface of the Port cockpit seat, aft of the existing sail locker hatch. (My Port sail locker goes all the way to the bottom of the boat, and is the area where I store my anchor + rode / fenders / mooring lines / fender board / fuel container for the Honda / tiller extensions / flag and flag pole / mast top pennant / etc.) What I have is the original sail locker opening, plus the new one aft of the original one. This is the additional hatch opening that gives me access to the aft end of the sail locker (the black hole of Calcutta): and now makes it a wonderful addition to the storage area. Total access from the companionway area all the way to the stern. If you put the rectangular hatch on the vertical surface of the cockpit you still gain access, but it is very awkward to try and get in there to get your bucket / sponge / rags / cleaning materials and fenders. Put the opening on the top surface, and then lift the hatch and go in vertically! Connie

Bill, I installed the Windline TT-3X on my M17 last year and have been happy with it. It is short enough when up that it doesn't drag in the water even when heeled to that side and yet is below the top of the transom so it's out of sight and out of the way. It doesn't reach as far into the water as I had hoped, but it is far enough to get your foot up onto while you're in the water. It doesn't lay flat against the transom when deployed, but has a tang on the bracket that holds it out at a slight angle. The biggest drawback is that the mounting bracket is only about 4 inches wide, so the forces are all applied to a small area. Transom reinforcement was necessary on my boat. Overall quality of the unit is very good. I installed a 8" round screw-in deck plate for access and it made the ladder installation almost easy. Boarding Ladder

It's time to bite the dreaded bullet and tackle two long-procrastinated projects. Adding a boarding ladder and motor mount to Storm Petrel's stern. I would appreciate any suggestions and warnings as to the best make and model boarding ladder for the M-15. Tod, yours is the Garelick #18017 (WM #283770), right? Does it extend far enough into the water to get your foot on it? Charless Fowlkes has a Windline 3-step telescoping ladder, WM # 165037. Charless, what kind of modification was needed when installing yours? I assume it was because the ladder is desinged for attachment to a swim platform. I like the telescoping models, but are they strong enough? Does the ladder lay against the transom when extended? It seems to me that the sturdiest design would rest against the transom to spread the horizontal load. Those that stand off put the load on one place, usually where they pivot. I'm leaning toward the Windline TT3X. It stands off, but is made for direct transom attachment, not to a swim platform. I know Doug Kelch added one last summer.
