Okay, I'm sorry about the spam, but I'm compelled to resubmit the question: My '84 Monty has plastic caps at the ends of the spreaders with plastic cover pieces that are affixed to those caps with screws to hold the shrouds in place. The caps and cover pieces both have a groove for the wire. Are replacement parts available? If not, would rubber spreader-boots be sufficient to hold the shrouds? I know the spreader boots are designed to prevent sail chafe, which would suggest they're probably not sufficient for the dual function of holding the shrouds. I apologize. Hi Sandra and everyone on the list, A few years ago BoatUs printed an article on tests they conducted on boarding ladders. Its a little dated but interesting reading. The link is: http://www.boatus.com/foundation/findings/boarding.htm BTW as soon as it warms up I plan on installing an adjustable motor mount and ladder. I bought a ladder similar to the trimline from the Potter factory. It is usually installed on their P19 and comes with one additional step. rowing or sculling M17

What success have my fellow M17 owners had with rowing or sculling an M17? It seems that this shouldn't be too difficult with a boat of this size. Hi Wayne, The hatch model I selected and installed has a rubber gasket under the lid, and has a twist to lock fastener on the top surface. I haven't noticed any leakage. When I'm cleaning the cockpit I'll slosh buckets of water over everything to flush away the dirt and grime. I have also put gaskets - closed cell foam strips about 3/4 inch wide with an adhesive backing - under my sail locker lids, so that when they are closed and the hasps are in place, the whole cockpit is water tight. boarding ladder

Bill: Garelick # 18017, page 720 of West Marine Catalog. If that's not it, mine is very similar. I installed it in '97. Be sure to leave room for rudder to swing all the way. Although only the bottom step is in water when deployed, it does the job. I think a boarding ladder should be standard equipment on the Montgomerys. There were two articles in the old newsletter of situations where there was real danger because of not having a boarding ladder-one on the Great Salt Lake and one on Lake Mendocino. In both instances the ones overboard were so exhausted and the freeboard was so high they could barely get on board. In the Lake Mendocino incident, a lady was sailing her M15 when she saw another lady yelling for help in the middle of the lake because her skeedo wouldn't start. It took for ever to haul her aboard. In the Salt Lake incident a man in his 70's was single handling when he fell overboard and barely could make it back aboard. He reported that he never sails alone without towing a long line off the stern. Rich Cottrell, "Really", M15, Menlo Park, Ca 63 degrees and sunny today

Larry, did you use a backing plate for the TT3X? Plywood? Does it seem > secure, or does the transom flex? Bill, On my M17, only the top half of the transom was reinforced with glassed in plywood. The ladder had to mount into the lower area, so I had 3/4 inch plywood glassed into the lower half (full width) which bonded to the hull and the upper reinforced area. Very strong. Probably overkill, but I also mounted an adjustable motor mount on the other side at the same time and wanted plenty of strength. I did try mounting the ladder first with just a backing plate (about a 6X8 piece of starboard, double thickness) for each bracket, but didn't like the way the whole area flexed when weight was put on the ladder. Hatches and Latches

There are some TH Marine hatches on the same WM catalog page as the Bomar hatches. Here is their web site: http://www.thmarine.com/ They have hatches, hatches with locking latches, and drop in boxes to fit the hatch openings. The boxes are 6 1/2 inches and 10 1/2 inches deep. They also have locking flush-mounted latches. I can not make out the dimensions on the web site, but they fit in a 2 3/8 inch hole. The small hatch is the roughly the same size as the Bomar hatch Connie used. (I too was under the impression that you mounted your hatch vertically Connie.)
