Dear Jerry, Thanks for getting back to me regarding the sold out galley pumps. I snoozed, so I lose. I did mail to you a check, and you can tear it up, or, you can pick up a few bottles of seasonal Paulaner Oktoberfest beer, and share them with Bob as you complete the new M23 cutter. I am sad at the news about Lyle, but happy to be enjoying his fabulous boat design. His name will live on as one of the all time premier sailboat architects. Also, thank you Jerry and Bob for putting his designs into reality for the rest of us to savor. Below waterline M-17 cockpit scuppers

Hi all, Our M-17 "Star Cross'd" #357, has the cockpit scuppers that exit below the waterline. The water exits from the cockpit sole into the aft lazerette, where it then drains into two holes, connected by flexible tubing, to the actual drains. I think I remember reading that Jerry M. said they were copper tubes bonded into the hull. Now that I'm a saltwater sailor, I'm paying more attention to this stuff, about keeping the people in and the water out, since the ocean is vaster, deeper, rougher, and saltier than the inland lakes I started on. Has anybody ever inspected these thru-hulls and found evidence of corrosion? How safe are they, and how often should I inspect them? And if or when they do get corroded, what can I do to fix it? Copper is supposed to be a noble metal, but I think it suffers from saltwater corrosion just the same. <Whine on> If they were proper bronze or nylon thru-hulls, with inspectable and repairable seacocks, I'd probably feel a little better. As it is now, once the connecting hose from the locker to the thru-hull is in place, all the pipes are invisible. My biggest worry is that I'll be rummaging about under the cockpit, shoving gear around (oars, inflatable, spin pole, anchors, etc), and accidentally shove too hard on the hose/pipe assembly and crack it without realizing. <Whine off> As an aside, it just shows that you never stop learning about your boat. When we bought Star Cross'd, there were two little corks floating around the starboard gear locker, and I was never sure what they were for. I am now. I was out sailing in Santa Monica Bay, and opened up the aft lazarette. There was about 2-3 inches of water sloshing around in there, with the metal gas can getting a salty bath. And since when you're motoring, the vent hole is open on the gas can, in rough seas there's the opportunity for water to get into the gas. Apparently, the bottom of the aft locker is also below waterline. Duh, now the purpose of the corks becomes clear. I'll use the corks to plug the locker exits, to keep the sea out of the aft lazarette. I'll rig a quick release string so that if we take on water either going to weather or from rain or get pooped going downwind, I'll just pop the corks out and let it drain. Bob, Thanks for the update on Lyle Hess, the news made an already dark day a little darker. Never met Lyle but did have a chance to hear him talk boats at the Newport in the water show in the early 80's. He understood boats and I and the rest of the M boaters are the beneficiaries of his knowledge. I appreciate his work and the great job you and Jerry do in transferring his work to the final product. Keep it up! Gary

M-17: Mainsail shape

Hi all, I'm trying to figure out if "Star Cross'd"s mainsail is blown out and needs re-cutting or replacement. Here's what I observe: 1. It's not ***clearly*** obvious that the point of maximum roach is forward of the center of the sail (like a good airfoil ought to have). 2. The sail doesn't seem particularly flat, seems to have a pretty good roach, maybe 6-9 inches at the deepest part 3. I can't seem to get the telltales on both the sides and the leech to fly horizontal at the same time, unless it's blowing pretty hard. The telltales on the leech seem to spend a lot of time sucked around to the windward side. I do all sorts of fiddling with the downhaul, outhaul, traveller, cunningham, flattening reef, and only a good stiff breeze (10+ knots) seems to keep all the main telltales flying. 4. Star Cross'd does seem to go to weather "appreciably", at least on smooth lakes. On bumpy, lumpy, Santa Monica Bay, it's a lot of work to consistently maintain a high pointing angle. Jerry M. has said before that if the sails are blown, the boat will refuse to go to weather. Unfortunately, I haven't raced it against other Monty's to know if I'm performing comparably. Can anyone who has a new M-17 sail tell me if their sail looks and behaves like Star Cross'd's mainsail? Thanks. I should probably send these questions to Kern Sails, they should know for sure. When I first purchased "Wild Hare", I had some rigging replaced and had the CB sandblasted and painted at Ventura Harbor Boatyard (http://www.vhby.com/) in Ventura and was very happy with their work. The people are very friendly and are glad to give advice if you are doing other work on your boat while it is on the hard. If I needed any hardware, I would just walk in and get what I needed from the chandlery and put it on a list, then they charged me for those items when I left; nice to be trusted! Tom Woodworth
