Consider drilling the hole for the mounting socket back about 6" from the tip of the tiller so that when you are not using the extension it is not in the way of your grip. First sail of M15

We launched our new M15 at Canyon Ferry Reservoir this weekend and daysailed yesterday and today. The launch was easy and we were very pleased with how the M15 sailed. We daysailed with two friends (total of four people) and were surprised at the room and comfort. The Suzuki engine started on the first pull and moved the boat smartly with the throttle only cracked open a little. It may take me a while to learn docking with an engine without a clutch. All in all a happy experience. We left the porta-potty ashore and used the space for sitting inside the cabin. Charless Fowlkes Bozeman, MT

Hi Brian, I launch without the rudder. In your situation, I would be tempted to leave the rudder off and steer with the outboard. Just use the crutch to support the mast. Lock the OB ahead, raise the mast, remove the crutch and install the rudder. Maybe a minute at most, during which time you travel say 50 to 100 feet. How much room do you have to maneuver - or not maneuver as the case may be? If you drift ten feet right or left will that be a problem? A lot of small boat people remove the rudder when moored, so this would not be an extra step. Less wood maintenance that way! Or, make a gallows frame that will support the mast and double as a sun shade. I want to do that, but I fear I will never get around to it. Just my opinion. Best wishes, Steve R. Hi, I have the following question, and a bit of background on why its so important. I would appreciate your opinions. QUESTION: Is the M15 a boat a person by themselves can EASILY raise and lower the mast on the water with the rudder still in place? BACKGROUND: I have a wonderful problem, free moorage. There is always a but though. The moorage is on a river leading into a lake. At the mouth of the river is a fixed bridge 11 feet from the water line. (A Sunfish would'nt even make it under) To get out to sail and get home I have to step the mast on the water leaving and returning. I will often go out solo, so stepping the mast has to be easily done by a reasonably fit person. I'm not one to drill holes into boats to add things, like shrouds to keep the mast from swinging wildly. I looked at a Catalina 18 the other day, and there is no way I would feel comfortable stepping the mast every time I wanted to go out. The mast was on the heavy side, and there is no standing rigging to provide lateral support as the mast is lowered. I would end up not sailing the boat very often because of this. Following are my thoughts on the boat's requirements: MUST HAVE: - Ability for 1 person to EASILY raise and lower the mast on the water with the rudder in place. - The boat is new or close to new shape - Low maintenance, for a boat (Almost no \ no wood ) - Reasonable performance - Sloop rigged - Keel boat - Draft of 3 ft. or less with keel \ keel-centerboard up - Sail 4 adults - Comfortable seating in cockpit - Sleep 2 adults in the same berth without a post separating them - Cabin with allowance for port-a-pot so women friends have a discrete place to "go" - Full set of running lights - Ability to mount a motor WOULD BE NICE: - Cockpit benches of 6' or more, to lay down - Sitting headroom in cabin ~40" - No keel locker on cabin floor - Ability to beach - Lines all running to the cockpit NOT IMPORTANT - Easy on and off trailering (I won't trailer very often) - Galley (Won't use) You can reach me directly at bgranowitz(a)hotmail.com FYI - I live in Seattle Thanks, Brian _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

Jerry, I use the Forespar tiller extension too, and find it delightful: holds course while single-handing; and locks rudder in place in the marina to keep it from swinging with every passing wave. My tiller is 36" long and I mounted the Forespar socket 1" form the forward end of the tiller. I have no problems with that location, and the tiller isn't weakened with the fitting. I have a M17 #305, and live in Bozeman, MT. After reading some of the archived digest comments I decided to register. Here is a brief introduction to my experience with my boat. There aren't a lot of sailing opportunites around Bozeman, but I have sailed many of the smaller reservoirs in the area. Mostly I sail at Canyon Ferry Reservoir on the Missouri River. The reservoir is about 20 miles long and 3 miles wide. I do a lot of overnight trips. At this lake the winds tend to be either non-existant or severe, which complicates sailing. I usually put in in the late afternoon, weather the afternoon storm, and then sail on the remaining breeze as it dies down about midnight. The next morning is spent motoring back to the boat ramp on glass-like water. I keep my boat at the lake on the trailer, and beach lauch it at different places depending on the reservoir level. Even though there are a fair number of sail boats on this lake, there are not many that actually sail when its windy and rough. I think that the M17 must be a much better boat than most for tolerating rough sailing conditions. I am usually the only boat on the water once the wind starts. Afternoon winds are commonly over 30 knots but then usually slowly die down in the early nighttime. I would like to here about how other people have adapted to sailing in high winds. I have reduced my original jib down to about a 60-70% "storm jib". This is only a home-made retrofit and I would like to have a more professional version. I nearly always have at least one reef in the main and very commonly have two. The boat is very ballanced with the reduced jib and reefed main allows me to keep my hands off the tiller and tend the boat single-handedly, throughout all wind speeds. I don't have much experience with the genoa, but it seems like a very substantial sail for the boat. When I got the boat not all of the sail hardware was present, I was missing a boom-vang, cunningham and any reefing equipment. I have adapted some home-made hardware but I would like to know what arragement people have found to work the best. I have also made modifications to my rudder, due to problems that is sounds like have been experienced by a lot of the digest subscribers. After nearly ripping my transom off in the shallow lakes that I sail, I decided to build a new shallower draft rudder. I copied sort of a cat-boat rudder that is very long and not very deep. The rudder sticks out about 20" behind the transom but only about 16" in the water (less than the retracted keel depth). To make the steering easier with this big of a rudder, I extended the front of the rudder about 8" in front of the pivot under the skeg of the boat. This overhang compensates for the larger rudder and works very well. I have also found that this larger, lower draft rudder has a lot more bite and is much more secure in big waves at low speeds and is helpful in preventing broaching. I would like to know if anyone else has come to the same conclusions. I have also modified the interior of the boat slightly. The boat originally had 3-berths and a galley. After hardly ever using the galley I decided to remove it and install a bench similar to the oppisite berth in its place. I recently learned that this is the new floor plan for new M17s. This arrangement is a lot better for sitting inside the boat. I tend to sit on the quater berths and use the v-berth for a table for cooking, etc. I am excited to here from other boat owners about their experiences, and be apart of the mailing list. Cool Flashlight

Greetings, Just want to pass on a "cool" find. If any of you are interested in little flashlights that are sized just right for your Montgomery I have a suggestion. I found this at my local Walmart and being an official flashlight aficionado I had to try it. Made by DORCY and called COOLBLUE. It's a single, focused LED that provides a slightly blue tinted light beam. It runs on 4 AA batteries for a stated 200 hours, and it is just hand sized. IMHO it is just right for a life jacket pocket for night sailing or over nighting on the boat.
