Single handed raising the mast on M15

Yea, someone else is having the same problem as me. If it can be done single handed, I haven't found the way. But then I thought it was because I am only 5'5" tall. Hit Tod, "Mast dropping" Mills isn't half as bad as "Mast Bending" Benneck" A 90 degree bend in your mast really ruins your day. If you only "dropped" it, with no other damage you're in good shape! Wish I could say that! 90 degree mast bend Connie

Benson", I'm sure I could find your name in the archives, but it's late and I want to forward this request before I call it a night. I am enamored with the photo of Grace on the Nor'Sea website and would love to see more. I love the green hull with ivory sheer and boot. Hi Murray and Sandra, Everyone seems to do what is most comfortable for them. This is what I do when lowering the mast. I leave the downhaul shackled to the jib halyard when I remove the jib. Of course, the bitter end of the halyard is cleated. I also cleat the bitter end of the downhaul. I unpin the forestay adjuster. I leave the adjuster pinned to the forestay so I do not have to remember which hole to put it back in. The mast is now supported by the jib halyard and downhaul. I fasten the forestay to the mast with a bungee, to keep the adjuster from bouncing around the deck. I go back to the cockpit. I reach up with my right hand and brace against the mast. With my left hand I uncleat the downhaul. I let the downhaul feed from my left hand as I lower the mast with the right. I take a few small steps back on the way down. Raising is the reverse. I raise the mast, cleat the downhaul, remove the bungee from the forestay, and go forward to pin it. I take a few small steps forward on the way up. I start off with two hands for raising, but near the top all the weight is transferred to my right. I keep the downhaul in my left hand. When the mast is erect I can support it with my right hand, then take the slack out of the downhaul with my left and cleat it off. I position myself so that my arm is always centered under the mast. I am pushing straight up and not wasting my strength pushing left or right. When the mast is near horizontal I let it rest on the heel of my hand, with my thumb and fingers cupped around it. I use my big muscles, not the small ones. If you have limited arm strength think through the processes to visualize a way to use your legs. I begin the lowering process standing erect, pushing off from balls of my feet, leaning forward slightly with my arm straight and reaching as high as I can. When I complete the raising process I have come back to the same position. You may not be able to raise or lower the mast completely from one position. If not, just cleat the downhaul, then move and continue. If you use the line and halyard method, just cleat the halyard. Some people find it helps to use a taller mast crutch. Hi Murray, 1. I have a tensioner on the forestay so that I can easily insert the clevis pin when I get the mast up. The original method is an exercise in frustration. There is no way to hold the mast and put enough tension on the forestay in order to insert the clevis pin in the bow fitting. That is a two man operation and still is mighty difficult. The answer is a lever tensioning device. This allows you to fasten the slightly loose forestay and then, tension it. I used WEST P/N 246175 Quick Release Shroud Levers, and instead of a clevis pin and a ring, I use a Ball-Lok Quick-Release Pin - Page 197 in my 1999 WEST Catalog. 2. With this hardware installed, I now run the jib halyard to my bow fitting (I don't have a bow pulpit), and back to the cockpit jam cleats. With mast bolt in the fitting, and everything on the mast running clear, I just walk the mast upright and then complete the job by pulling on the jib halyard and securing it in the cam cleat. Then I can go forward, insert my Ball-Lok pin in the Quick Release Shroud Lever at the bow fitting, and the job is done. Next you tension the Quick Release Shroud Lever, lock it in place with the pin that is supplied with the fitting, and the mast is up and ready, well almost ready to go sailing (after you put on the boom and the sails). Raising an M15 Mast

M Boaters, Can anyone tell me how to successfully raise a M15 mast single handed? It seems that I need a second person to fasten the shrouds while I hold the mast steady in place. Murray Wood M 15 MMP152410283
