Hi Andy,I'm not too sure why you think this can't be a genuine copy?I purchased this from a promo guy in the early 90's who worked with Scott Piering. The Appearing sticker is genuine. Maybe he had the sleeve printed? All I know is it plays like an original and not a copy. I got an original 1st gen White Room VHS copy back in the 90s and it looks identical to Andy's: no case, simple white labels with typewriter fonts.
What's the difference between 1st and 2nd gen then? At least, Andys version says in orange note that it's a proofing copy. Also, I was browsing old mail archives couple of days ago when I was trying to find a KLF gear list, I bumped to an old mail where someone was asking "where I could find both White Room versions on mpeg? Adam's got one on his server but I need the other one now... should be the older demo version I suppose" -- anttil.
I also have the same promo copy as the one Tom is listing on ebay with the 'Appearing' sticker....obtained in 1995/6 through Record Collector.....and must admit, have always assumed it was genuine. Will be interested to see if we ever get to the bottom of this mystery... ________________________________ From: Andy Lee <andrewdavidlee@gmail.com> To: All bound for Mu-Mu Land. <klf@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, 16 February 2012, 23:09 Subject: Re: [KLF] Collection going on Ebay Hi Tom The tech to create that cover (domestically) did not exist in 1991, that's all I'm saying. Holy moly.... I've stirred up a hornets nestI went to bed feeling really depressed - I have always thought of this as a genuine copy - maybe not the reported first batch from Bill Butt but a genuine copy non the less. Feeling slightly better this morning after seeing Lens comments.Anyway after careful thought I have decided to remove this from sale until we can qualify its originality. I do not want to be accused of selling anything that isn't genuine and it will distract from my other sales which definitely are the real thing. I am gong on a hunt for the original correspondence I had with the seller back in the 90's as I met up with them to exchange money and the tape. Here's what I'm thinking - maybe there was another batch made from the original master a couple of years later by the production company?I would be happy to meet with anybody who lives in the South to review and discuss. Just catching up on all the recent list activity and I noticed this thread. Don't know if any of this helps but. Back before I sold much of my KLF collection I had three variations of The White Room VHS tape. The 1st was a rather poor reproduction that was circulated through the list by Jai. pretty sure this was between 95 and 97 but perhaps Jai might remember better than I Not long after I bought two of a first generation tapes from Andy. the card sleeves and labelling to both were typically generic of the industry promo video exactly as the images Andy posted links to. If memory serves me I eventually sold one to Xavier and the other to a collector in the States. Some months later I responded to an advert in Record Collector who was advertising a lot of "Heavily Priced" items amongst the collection he was offering "The White Room Original VHS (Finished)" After asking about the items validity he told me that he had worked for Scott at Appearing and the tape had been for presentation to "German Investors" to secure distribution funding. Rather than parting with the money by post I arranged to meet him at his home (a flat in Windsor). When I got there he showed me the tape which was presented very professionally and appeared to be similar in quality as the "Waiting" and "Stadium House" tapes I had. I bought the tape and before leaving asked him if he had any other KLF items I might be interested in. He pulled out the 12" pressing plate for the original grey vinyl "It's Grim Up North". After he told me the eye-watering price he wanted for it I tried haggling the price down but he refused to budge. his only concession was to say that if I paid him his price he had a second copy of The White Room film that he would throw in. At that time I was utterly addicted to collecting KLF and knew that I simply couldn't leave without the plate and eventually buckled and paid up. When back at home I played the two Windsor tapes and Andy's promo copy and there was absolutely no difference in the content or quality of the tapes leading me to always believe that both were completely genuine. I am pretty certain that I later sold one of the tapes to Len and the other to a guy who lived in or near Luton. It is quite a while ago but from memory the sleeve to Tom's video looks the same as the ones I had from Windsor. Yes the copy I got was a copy of a copy of... (perhaps several more times) so wasn't too great in its initial state, and scart to scart recording back in the mid-90s certainly didn't do anything to improve the quality either. It's a shame the internet was so different back then. Even if someone has been able to digitise the video to a reasonable quality and a reasonable file size, it would have taken days to upload somewhere and months to download for those of us who were on dial-up (ahhh nostalgia for the old days...) The tape in the photos is the actual tape I sold to Tim. Here's a scenario. When I worked at Appearing Scott got a big cheque for some archive Bob Marley tapes he sold to Island. He went on a bit of a spending spree for AV stuff. We bought a VHS duplicator that made spot on copies. Could this be an explanation for the excellent quality but difference in packaging? Sorry Tom if my comments made you pull your auction. That wasn't my intent, I just get my detective head on sometimes. Andy On 17 February 2012 15:36, PVC <pvc@positivevoid.co.uk> wrote:

I went to bed feeling really depressed - I have always thought of this as a genuine copy - maybe not the reported first batch from Bill Butt but a genuine copy non the less. Feeling slightly better this morning after seeing Lens comments.****

Anyway after careful thought I have decided to remove this from sale until we can qualify its originality. I do not want to be accused of selling anything that isn't genuine and it will distract from my other sales which definitely are the real thing. I am gong on a hunt for the original correspondence I had with the seller back in the 90's as I met up with them to exchange money and the tape.****
** **
Here's what I'm thinking - maybe there was another batch made from the original master a couple of years later by the production company?****
** **
I would be happy to meet with anybody who lives in the South to review and discuss. Where abouts do you live Andy?****

Hi Tom The tech to create that cover (domestically) did not exist in 1991, that's all I'm saying. I worked for Scott from '90 to '92 and I don't recognise that cover. The pics in my link are the ones that came from Bill Butt. What does the tape label look like? Brilliant. This is what I love about the KLF so many great stories and dedicated collectors....and also how it jogs the memory. Tim it was me....in Luton... we met in a carpark...remember? All I could remember was the story of working for Scott and the money raising. But now I remember it was you telling me where you got it. So we now think it is a genuine copy - praise be!Do you think we are safe to re-list it now?
