I never really "got" Spike's work either (wrong generation, I suspect) but the things he influenced (just like RAW) have enriched my life a great, great deal.

Celebrity deaths seem to be coming in a clutch at the moment, from Charlie Drake to President Ford and James Brown. Funny how that sometimes happens, with the most disparate people (Ernie Wise and Stanley Kubrick, etc) gathered together at Reaping time. We also had a death in my partner's family this week. As Simon says, its very sad for RAW's friends and fans - including thousands of JAMMS/KLF fans worldwide. Personally, though, I always found "Illuminati" to be a pointless and very long stoner in-joke, one which I always stood on the outside of. Hi All I thought i would air my views as i know a little bit about your latest questions. 1/ The way to tell a bootleg from the original is to compere the handwriting on the run-out groove, as all the original tunes were hand written this is easy and bootlegger has to be really clever to copy somebody's handwriting with a metal scribe! You can also check the die marks on the label (the raised circle around the center hole these are different for each presssing plant, and for that fact each pressing machine.So for the forger to copy sombody's handwriting with a scribe and then find a pressing machine with the same die and have a copy of the original tune to copy from would be pretty smart. 2/So to the coloured plastics ,the only two colours which are original are: It's Grim Up North 12" Grey vinyl without the Cat. No.JAMS26! America 7" Splatter vinyl This was made for the KLF but was returned to the pressing plant by Sally at the office as she did not like it. The rest of the colours(with the proper handwritten Cat Nos) were made by the night shift at the pressing plant as a side line. Also the sleeve for KLF8T has Pink lettering on a Black background it does not have E-Train written at the bottom it has White Room!.I have a copy of the Kylie remix-remix 12" somewhere from the UK pressing plant but i don't think it has the Cat No. KLF 010RR. Question raised to send your cat.nbr of your LT copy and how you got your copy and send it to anttil (gave his emailaddress). He is willing to create a website containing the different handwritings. The 'old skool' way of cutting vinyl was to get as muchon the outside of therecord as possible to avoid 'crosstalk' (i think its called) as there is less of a curve on the outside of a vinyl. Also, most decks dont have the needle pointing slightly 'out' from straight.. so when the arm gets nearest the centre- the needle is at more of an angle across the groove... so they cut thing towards the outside of the record. Later on record companies thought they were being ripped off and some started to insist on using the whole vinyl. Also, louder cuts take up more space on the vinyl and other companies wanted them LOUD.- Arista may have insisted on quality not volume, or at least their cutting engineer (not thatthis explains a silly run off groove). Sorry everyone i forgot to add some more info on checking bootlegs,another way to check is to look at the width of the grooves.When records are mastered the engineer calculates the groove width for best bass response etc on the length of the track(the wider the groove the better the quality)no two engineers would calculate the same groove width so you can also check how much space the music tales up on the disk, and how many run out grooves there are.There you go i could go on but thats it for now. As I think I said earlier, I estimate the Whitney limited edition would reach around £20 - mine did, about thirteen months ago, anyway. Why did it not make more? Well, I honestly think much of the early JAMMs stuff is just not as commercial (and as musically good) as the Pure Trance era and beyond - and therefore, not as collectible (apart from JAMSLP1). Also, the exact same version of "Whitney Joins the JAMs" is still available on "The History of the JAMs" import CD - and a 500-only limited edition of something that's unavailable elsewhere (like KLF010RR or K Sera Sera) would probably sell for a far, far higher price. Although you never can tell ... Anyway, for successful auctions, I suggest this: get together a few KLF items (they don't all have to be mega rarities, though), photograph them well, put them on Ebay in chronological release order (people seem to love that!) and explain everything about the release in absolute detail. This can be quite fun, and I loved writing my descriptions (which, flatteringly and annoyingly, other people used to copy and paste into their own auctions). Then, when people click on "your items", they will find a clump of beautiful KLF ephemera (I always had photos in the listings page) that they can bid on. It has that "rifle range" vibe. I'm sure these tactics bolstered my final listing prices by nearly 100% sometimes (plus, as I said, klf.de's friendly advertising of my auctions). Oh, and forget about "buy it now". I started all my auctions at 99p - Ebay finds its own fair level. Anyway, Elliot, I'm sorry all this sounds a bit high-handed (especially the stuff about the "holy grail" ETERNA 1 and the bootleg ETERNA 23). But we're all mostly big-time KLF nerds round here with Ernie's discog encoded into our DNA ... (Sighs) It's not big or clever - but at least it's not trains or "Doctor Who" (apart from KLF3 and KLF8).
