FOTD 09-11-14 (Deep Blue Nowhere [A-8.5,M-7])

FOTD -- November 09, 2014 (Rating A-8.5,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image features the (-Z)^(1.1)+C Mandeloid, which is shaped much like the Mandelbrot set but with only one bud, the large period-2 bud on the negative X-axis. (The other buds do exist, but in today's image they are off in imaginary planes. They can however be brought out of hiding with the BranchCut formulas.) The image shows a near-Julia view of the 'Seahorse Valley' area of the parent Mandeloid. The effect of the striped rings surrounding the central open area was created by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'summ', an option I rarely use but which works well with today's image. The name "Deep Blue Nowhere" implies that fractals exist nowhere in the three-dimensional space in which we appear to exist, yet they certainly do exist somewhere because we can see them on the screen. Perhaps they lie in the mysterious 'implicate' order that some claim lies hidden beneath the surface of the 'real' 3-D world. One thing not buried in abstruse abstractions is the calculation time, which at a fireball 30 seconds will be finished before impatience can develop. And the web sites can remove the task of running a parameter file. FOTD 07-11-14 (The Great Paradox [A-9,M-9.5])

FOTD -- November 07, 2014 (Rating A-9,M-9.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The artistic rating of today's image is a 9. This might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the math rating of 9-1/2 is definitely well-earned. Who ever heard of an escape-time fractal with an exponent of Z as close to unity as 1.0009, the value that creates the parent Julibrot that holds today's scene? True, some hyperdimensional trickery was necessary to reveal the details, but the image does exist, and that is that. When the parent fractal is calculated with a reasonable maxiter of around 1000, the parent fractal is little more than a lopsided and featureless empty circle. But when the maxiter is increased to 48000, the parent takes on the vague shape of the Mandelbrot set. Today's scene lies in what would be the East Valley of this wannabe Mandelbrot parent. The name "The Great Paradox" refers to the surprising detail in the image. The puzzle might not equal the so-called 'measurement problem' of quantum theory, but to me at least, the detail in today's image was totally unexpected. Unfortunately, there is a price to pay for the surprise. With such a large maxiter and a rather complex formula, the image takes almost an hour to finish. FOTD 06-11-14 (Signs in the Sky [A-8,M-9])

FOTD -- November 06, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The math aspect of today's image rates a 9. The reason is the ridiculously low exponent of Z in the formula, which at 1.005 is by far the closest I have yet come to an exponent of unity, a value that does not produce fractals. The orientation of the image is also unusual, lying halfway between the Mandelbrot and Julia planes, and double rotated 45,45 degrees from both. The art aspect rates an 8, which is also quite respectable. I put over an hour of extra time into the coloring, most of it devoted to bringing out the subtle striations in the background. The name "Signs in the Sky" refers to this striped background effect. The calculation time of 12 minutes is challenging, but nothing when compared to the herculean calculation time of the next FOTD. The web sites can always remove all calculation-time challenges however. FOTD 04-11-14 (Fire beast [A-8,M-7])

FOTD -- November 04, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Can the expression (-Z)^(1.06)+C create a fractal? This expression is mighty close to linear. Well, as today's image shows, it certainly can. But it does not do so with a trick. Today's trick is viewing the eastern side of the resulting Mandeloid at an angle double rotated 15,15 degrees from the Julia direction. When this is done, we get something I have named "Fire Beast". But don't expect a wild animal in the scene. The beast is purely abstract. Actually, similar beasts exists in fractals with exponents less than 1.01, and a future FOTD might put some of these exotic creatures on display. The art rates an 8, which rewards me for the effort I put into the colors. The math rates a 7, since it's not every day that such an unlikely scene is revealed. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes may be avoided by checking one of the FOTD web sites. FOTD 03-11-14 (Poachers Afoot [A-7,M-3])

FOTD -- November 03, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today for a change we brush aside the fancy formulas and return to the simplest fractal formula of all -- Z^2+C -- the formula that creates the Mandelbrot set. We check the East Valley of a tiny minibrot on the main spike of the M-set, where we find today's scene, which consists of an almost invisible minibrot surrounded by a flat pancake-like disk with four elephant heads arranged symmetrically around its edge. When I saw the elephant heads but no bodies, I thought that poachers must be in the vicinity, killing the elephants to take their tusks back to the developing eastern countries, where they will sell them at a huge profit. I fail to see poachers in the image however, so all I could do was assume that they are still prowling around the area. I named the image "Poachers Afoot". The elephant heads are surrounded by a field of deep blue, which perhaps reflects my sadness that, thanks to human nature, these mighty animals might soon be extinct. In my opinion, this blueness makes the art worth a 7. The totally familiar math aspect rates only a 3, and even this might be an over-rating. One thing not in doubt is the faster-than-light calculation time of 10 seconds. The web sites can even save the task of running the parameter file. HI, trying to make you curious, lets see if I suceed. ; Already back again with a second image for todays MOTD, using the same combination: Newton-Secant-ManyMods, trying to emphasize the inside3 -Mmods. HI, every now and then a picure turns up that does not resemble any one seen before. As the main part is surrounded by dust which reminds me of the chaotic matter filling the universe the title seems justified. The combination Newton-Secant-Mmods has been used before but with completely different results. As mentioned before the inside one -Secant- is etremely unpredictable and the reason for a surprising variety of deails that maintain a strict order supplied by the Newton shape. HI, two images today. Using the "old" usual colormap again. The images are "Hermaphrodites" having lost some own features and taking some of the other, but I think the reult is striking. Did not succeed to "fill" the Newton center. It´s a hard nut as we say in Germany. Still trying - maybe another one will be added. The parfiles can be copied using the dropbox link.
