FOTD -- October 25, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image continues the same theme as the most recent three images. One negative part of Z^(-14.14) was added to six negative parts of Z^(-1.414) before 1/C was added. The relation to the square root of 2 is intentional. The resulting parent fractal consists of the same large many-lobed Mandeloid as the past three FOTD's, but in this case, the enormous rings to the east are missing. The northern bay of the parent is partly obscured by two thick arms extending toward its mouth, which create the impression that the area is not critical and therefore no midgets will be found there. However, in the worlds created by the M-mix4 formula, things are not always as they first appear, and a closer examination of the eastern arm revealed suspiciously symmetrical areas. When I dove down into one of these areas, I did indeed find a perfect quadratic midget. The entire area is in a state that I call 'eroded', with the normally solid outside elements broken by numerous holes, which in many cases are larger than the midget itself. When the scene is calculated at the default bailout radius of 100, the holes are so numerous that they comprise the greater part of the scene. When this situation exists, the better fractals are often found when the remaining outside material is 'evaporated' by raising the bailout radius to one-googol, leaving only the ghost of the midget that was once there. It is this midget- ghost that is visible in today's image, which totally consists of trapped 'inside' points. The ghost is made manifest by the inside fill of bof61. With its 3-D effect, the ghost-midget rates a conservative 7, perhaps a liberal 8. I decided on the lesser rating; I could just as honestly have chosen the 8. (Is today's image really one whole rating beneath yesterday's?) I have no explanation for the name I gave the image -- "A Ringing Spectre", but the words have a poetic quality that rather matches the feeling of the blue and gold image. The 12-minute render time is somewhat slow, making the download the wiser but not quite as much fun choice. FOTD 24-10-02 (Starring a Midget [8])

FOTD -- October 24, 2002 (Rating NA) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With all the breaking news, things are hectic here at F.C. this morning, so today's discussion will be short. To produce today's fractal, I went back to the fractal of two days ago and again raised the value of the exponents of Z, this time to -1.32 and -13.2, and at the same time, reduced the portions by 40 percent. This small change made a large change in the appearance of the parent fractal. Today's parent fractal consists of a single large, multi-lobed Mandeloid, with a large but partial ring originating in a valley at the north end and stretching out east, down and around to the southern part of the parent. Today's scene is located at the end of the main stem of a larger midget located near the point where the ring emerges from the northern valley. I named the scene "Starring a Midget" after the vague star-like yellowish area around the midget. I gave the image no rating. Due to the hectic news developments, I had no chance to study the image in a detached manner. The parameter file requires 14 minutes to run. Reply to Mark A. Freeze post: Good words ... I think. Actually, the Fractint program is excellent enough as it is and runs - it isn't of any concern what OS it is using. I have just installed XP and am having enuf trouble with it as is I will not even think of trying Fractint on it when it runs so well on DOS 7. There is a "port in progress" supposedly to rewrite Fractint for Windoze NT, which would also then be for XP. I don't know how far along it is or if it is even continuing; they, like so many others in cyberspace, ignore my email.

Dave/Tony, I just wanted to clear up some confusion in case others are trying to solve problems following this discussion. I replied: My screen resolution in XP is set at 800 x 600 so that can't be it. I looked at the settings of the DOS box. The only setting I can see that directly addresses resolution is on the Compatability tab. There is a box to check off that says "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution." I have it unchecked. (I've tried it both ways and it doesn't change anything.) The memory settings of the DOS box are set at the defaults. Per Steven Hessler's info posted here last week, these shouldn't matter. My screen colors are set to 32 bit, btw. I'm still playing around with the DOS box settings, but I haven't found any that make a difference. Bill

FOTD 23-10-02 (Silverhouse Fractal [8])

FOTD -- October 23, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's image I took the -1.23 of the past two FOTD's, changed it to -1.28 and got a similar parent fractal with different details. This new fractal has new valleys that yesterday's lacks, some of the valleys more convoluted, with more fragmented elements. Today's image lies at the tip of a rather unique broken filament extending from a bud in one of the new valleys. The filament is more of a discontinuous chain of rasp-like elements rather than a continuous jagged line, and as always, the nature of the filament is mirrored in the elements surrounding the central midget in the image. I gave the image a rating of 8, which might be a bit above what it is actually worth, but the scene is still an interesting one, well worth the 7 minutes required to render from the parameter file. I named the picture "Silverhouse Fractal". When I named it, I must have had a logical reason. If there was a reason however, it now eludes me; so for all intents, the image can be considered as having been named by accident. FOTD 22-10-02 (New World Symphony [6])

FOTD -- October 22, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's image, I stayed in the same parent fractal that produced the past two FOTD images. The parent fractal consists of a group of weird-shaped Mandeloids, with a jagged filament leading from the eastern-most figure to an immense ring lying farther to the east. Today's image is located in the area where the filament joins the ring. Other disconnected rings lie scattered even farther to the east, but these are not involved in today's image. I may visit these far-out areas in a future FOTD however. The FOTD for today has mixed themes within its single image. The ovaloid elements extending straight out from the center midget create a feeling of rigid inflexibility, while an element of chaos is added by the twisting, jagged filaments in the discontinuities, which cut off parts of some ovaloids. I named today's picture"New World Symphony". There is an actual New World Symphony, which, though it is one of my favorites, has no connection to the image. The name merely expresses a vague feeling of the nature of the scene. I was about to rate the image at a 7, but then I recognized the resemblance to several earlier FOTD's and decided to drop the rating to a 6. This is still above average, but only slightly. The render time of the parameter file is a nominal 8 minutes on my aging fractal computer. That time will be correspondingly shorter on newer, faster machines. The dynamic cats took full advantage of the mild conditions by lurking several hours in the holly thicket, where the holly berries, which decorate at Christmas and feed the wintering birds, are just beginning to ripen. As for me, I'm just beginning another day's work, and it's time to turn off the fractal mode until the work is finished. Thanks to Tony et al. I have added a second hard drive to my machine. I created a FAT partitiion on it and put Fractint there. I created a Fractint.cfg file by booting to DOS with a Windows 98 boot disk and running makefcfg.exe. Oddly, the video modes in the new Fractint.cfg all work except one, 1600 x 1200. I can live with that though. I can use the disk video modes if I need to create a hi res picture for printing. I still cannot get the program to use any video mode above 640 x 480 when going through Windows XP. I must still boot to DOS to run Fractint to get the rest of the modes in Fractint.cfg to work. It does not matter which boot disk I use for this, by the way, the XP or 98 version. Why are we still holding on to Fractint?

For visual scanning a M-set for J-set parameter choices, Fractint's full screen display has clearly been the best alternative for me. Also, Fractint's capability to render to screen at various resolutions has been a tremendous time saver. This has been especially true for iterative J-set selection in multiple parameter models.
