This event is free and open tothe public. Born on November 8, 1945, in Bisbee, Arizona, Alice Notley grew up in Needles,California. She received a BA from Barnard College in 1967, and an MFA from thethe Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1969. Shemoved about frequently in her youth (San Francisco, Bolinas, London, Essex,Chicago) and eventually married the poet Ted Berrigan in1972, with whom she had two sons. In the early 1970s, Notley settled in NewYork’s Lower East Side, where she was very involved in the local literary scenefor several decades. In 1979, she received a fellowship from the NationalEndowment for the Arts. After Berrigan’s death in 1983, she married the Britishpoet Douglas Oliver. Thoughshe is often identified as a prominent member of the eclectic second generationof The New YorkSchool, her poetry also demonstrates a continuing fascination withthe desert and its inhabitants. Notley’scollections of verse include Certain Magical Acts (Penguin,2016); Songs and Stories of the Ghouls (Wesleyan UniversityPress, 2011); Grave of Light: New and Selected Poems 1970-2005 (WeslyanUniversity Press, 2006), which was awarded the 2007 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize fromthe Academy of American Poets for the best book of the year; Disobedience (Penguin,2001), winner of the 2002 International Griffin Poetry Prize; Mysteriesof Small Houses (Penguin, 1998); Selected Poems of AliceNotley (Talisman House, 1993); Margaret and Dusty (CoffeeHouse Press, 1985); and Sorrento (Sherwood Press, 1984). Hercollection How Spring Comes (Toothpaste Press, 1981) receiveda 1982 San Francisco Poetry Award. Other early titles include WaltzingMatilda (Kulchur Foundation, 1981), Alice Ordered Me To BeMade (Yellow Press, 1976), and 165 Meeting House Lane (“C”Press, 1971). She has also published Tell Me Again (Am HereBooks, 1982), an autobiography, and experiments with visual arts; her worksinclude collages, watercolors, and sketches. Shehas said that her speech is the voice of “the new wife, and the new mother” inher own time, but that her first aim is to make a poem, rather than present a platformof social reform. Notleyhas received the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Poetry andwas a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2001, she received both an AcademyAward in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and thePoetry Society of America’s Shelley Memorial Award. This event is free and open tothe public. Eric Blix’s book, a story collectionentitled Physically Alarming Men, waspublished by Stephen F. Austin State University Press. The stories in thiscollection explore the complications of a present contaminated by the past.Some plots: a trio of fraudsters set up camp outside a northern Minnesota PeatBog hoping to kidnap two brothers said to be gifted with the ability to heal;an emotionally stunted maintenance worker steals his wealthy client's child togo noodling for catfish; a woman abandons her husband on the side of the roadduring a quixotic road trip to his hometown. Originally from northwesternMinnesota, I earned my MFA at Minnesota State University, Mankato. I currentlyreside in Salt Lake City, where I study in the PhD program in creative writingat the University of Utah. Rhett Cooper was born andraised in Fillmore, Utah. He earned a BA in English Teaching from theUniversity of Utah and will be graduating with an MFA in Creative Writing fromthe University of Utah in Spring 2018. Rhett's interest include his family,writing, sex, TV, and superheroes. Rhett is writing a manuscript titled Nothing is Secret, a collection ofstories about gay mormon drug addicts, all of whom are/were probably him, afterwhich he will proceed with his 15-point plan to arouse bi-curiosity insuperlative man Henry Cavill. Winner of the 2013 Cobalt Poetry Prize for his poem “Trucker,” JonathanTravelstead has compiled an astounding collection of adrenalized poetry in hisfirst two collections, How We Bury Our Dead and Conflict Tours. Travelsteadserved in the Air Force National Guard for six years as a firefighter andcurrently works as a full-time firefighter for the city of Murphysboro. Havingfinished his MFA at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, he now works onan old dirt-bike he hopes will one day get him to Peru. Kathline Carr, writer and visual artist, is the author of MiraculumMonstrum, forthcoming from Red Hen Press and winner of the 2015 ClarissaDalloway Book Prize. Carr’s writing and art have appeared in AlexandriaQuarterly, Calyx, Connecticut Review, HawaiiReview, Earth's Daughters and elsewhere; she has exhibitedin the Berkshires, New York City, Boston, Toronto, and at artSTRAND Gallery inProvincetown. Carr received her BFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College,VT and holds an MFA in Visual Arts from The Art Institute of Boston at LesleyUniversity. Sylvia Torti and Richard Robbins will read from theirworks on Wednesday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City PublicLibrary as part of the City Art Reading Series and the Utah Humanities BookFestival. This event is free and open to the public. Sylvia Torti: Set in and around a researchlaboratory in which two scientists are experimenting on birds to discover theorigins of memory and birdsong, Sylvia Torti’s Cages is a complex interweavingof biological, philosophical and mystical themes. Two neurologists are engagedin divergent quests: one to locate the source of memory and the other to studyspeech patterns in humans by analyzing and manipulating bird vocalization. Bothmen use experiments on live songbirds in a laboratory on a university campus,and both become romantically intertwined with a woman lab assistant who takesissue with their methods. Overshadowing this trio are significant figures fromtheir individual pasts—a distant mother, a former girlfriend, a best friend andornithological expert who dies tragically while conducting field research inthe Amazon, and a mentor turned lover and nemesis. This is a subtly layerednovel rich in natural description and sense of place that grapples with seriousphilosophical and moral themes, peopled by characters who must confront theemotional truths in their lives in order to be released from their own,individual cages. Sylvia Torti is the author of The Scorpion’s Tail, winner ofthe Miguel Marmol Award for first fiction by an American of Latino descent. Sheholds a Ph.D. in biology and is Research Assistant Professor in biology as wellas current Dean of the Honors College at the University of Utah. Richard Robbins grew up in Southern California and Montana.He has published five books of poems, most recently Radioactive City (BelldayBooks, 2009) and Other Americas (Blueroad Press, 2010). He has received awardsfrom The Loft, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the National Endowment for theArts, and the Poetry Society of America. From 1986-2014, Robbins directed theGood Thunder Reading Series at Minnesota State University Mankato, where hecontinues to direct the creative writing program. Indeed, thepoet himself calls this book a “quirky volume,” the genesis being the desire tocreate something substantially different and sustained.Since food “had beenincreasingly creeping into my poetry,” Brewer writes, and because he had beenasked to write anecdotally about recipes by a journal editor, this unusualmemoir took shape. GaylordBrewer, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, earned a PhD from Ohio StateUniversity. He currently teaches at Middle Tennessee State University, where hefounded and for twenty-one years edited the journal Poems & Plays. This event is free and open to the public. Matthew Cooperman is an American poet, critic and editor. Heis the author of five full-length collections of poems, including Spool, winnerof the New Measure Prize (Free Verse Editions/Parlor Press, 2016), Imago forthe Fallen World (w/Marius Lehene, Jaded Ibis, 2013) and Still: of the Earth asthe Ark which Does Not Move (Counterpath Press). Cooperman’s first book, ASacrificial Zinc, won the Lena Miles Wever-Todd Prize from Pleiades in 2001. Cooperman has also been active as a collaborator, working withsuch varied groups and persons as Sharon Butcher Dance, Marisol EckertCollective, artist Lisa Cooperman, Italian artist Simonetta Moro, Canadiancomposer Libby Larsen, and British poet Lawrence Upton. In 2004 he co-foundedthe collective Accidental Vestments with the Romanian artist Marius Lehene.Since that time he and Lehene have been active on a number of projects, mostnotably the image and textbook Imago for the Fallen World. With the poet AbyKaupang, Cooperman has authored a number of works, most notably the ongoingprojects NOS (disorder, not otherwise specified) and Jungle Book: A Memoir ofAbilities. The two often perform together. Aby Kaupang is currently serving as the Fort Collins PoetLaureate. She is the author of Disorder, 299.00 (Essay Press,2016), Little"g" God Grows Tired of Me (SpringGun Press, 2013), Absence is such aTransparent House (Tebot Bach, 2011) and Scenic Fences | Houses Innumerable(Scantily Clad Press, 2009).
