Poet Lara Candland and writer RanjanAdiga will read from their work March 21st at the Salt Lake City Public Libraryat 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Lara Candland’s latest book is The Lapidary’s Nosegay from the Center forLiterary Publishing’s Mountain West Poetry Series. Candland is a poet,musician, singer, and co-founder of and chief-librettist for the SeattleExperimental Opera and a member of Deseret Experimental Opera. Her work hasappeared in Fence, Colorado Review, the Crab Creek Review, the Likewise Folio,Barrow Street, and many other journals. Her first book, Alburnum of the Greenand Living Tree, was published in 2010, and her performance with Lalage—poetryand live electronic looping and manipulations—appears on the CD Lalage: Live onSonarchy. Her opera Sunset with Pink Pastoral was a finalist in the GenesisPrizes for New Opera and was presented at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London aswell as in performances in Seattle, Washington; Vancouver, BC; and Salt LakeCity, Utah. RanjanAdiga teaches creative writing classes at Westminster College. Hisworks have appeared in Story Quarterly, South Asian Review, among others. Hisstories explore lives of immigrant communities, their hopes and anxieties, asthey assimilate into American culture. Ranjan is currently workingtowards completing his debut short story collection. His book, World onFire: The History of Wildland Firefighting is coming out this summer from theHistory Press. Poets Jacqueline Osherow and ConnieVoisine will present their work on February28th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City ArtReading Series. Poet Connie Voisine grew up in Maine andearned a BA in American studies from Yale University. She lived in New YorkCity, studying writing at the New School and the Writers Studio, before earningher MFA from the University of California, Irvine, and PhD from the Universityof Utah. Her first collection, Cathedral of the North (2001),won the Association of Writers & Writing Programs Award Series in Poetry,and her second, Rare High Meadow of Which I Might Dream (2008),was a Los Angeles Times Book Award finalist. Deploying akind of lyric narrative, Voisine’s poems frequently feature speakers as theyencounter contemporary culture in a variety of locations—including the AmericanSouthwest and Mexico. Rare High Meadow of Which IMight Dream was also influenced by medieval literature and thepoetry of Marie de France. Voisine lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where sheis an associate professor of English at New Mexico State University and adirector of La Sociedad para las Artes. Jacqueline Osherow’s most recent book is Ultimatum from Paradise (LSU Press,2014). She is currently working on MyLookalike at the Krishna Temple. She is also the author of Dead Men’s Praise, Hoopoe’s Crown, and Lookingfor Angels in New York among other collections. Osherow has received grants from the JohnSimon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the NEAand the Witter Bynner Poetry Prize from the American Academy and Institute ofArts and Letters. She is Distinguished Professor of English and CreativeWriting at the University of Utah. City Artis longest running literary arts series in Salt Lake. WritersLisa Roullard and Mike Dorrell willread from their work on Wednesday, January 10th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt LakeCity Public Library as part of the City Art Reading Series and the UtahHumanities Book Festival. This event is free and open to the public. LisaRoullardwas born and raised in Seattle. She earned her BA in English at theUniversity of Washington and her MFA in Creative Writing at Eastern WashingtonUniversity. Her poetry has appeared in magazines such as HawaiiPacific Review and Atlanta Review and on buses inBoise, Idaho, as part of Poetry in Motion. In 2013 she won the UtahOriginal Writing Competition for poetry. Years ago she was nominatedfor a Pushcart Prize. In addition to writing poetry, Lisa is trying her hand atchildren’s picture books. She lives in Salt Lake City with herfamily where as often as possible she walks in the rain. Mike Dorrell was born and broughtup in Swansea, Wales. Best known as a playwright, he is the author of over adozen plays for stage, radio and television including work for Paines Plough,Avon Touring, and BBC Radio 4. In Utah, both Salt Lake Acting Company and UtahContemporary Theatre have performed his work, and with the latter he devisedthe Talking Wales series of monologues which was performed in unusual theatrespaces including this library. Mike has first and second degrees from theUniversities of London and Bristol, and has an M.A. in British and AmericanLiterature from the U. of U. He has taught both there and at WestminsterCollege. He was Dramaturg for Salt Lake Acting Company from 1999 to 2008 andwhile there he helped develop new plays by Julie Jensen, Jeff Metcalf and others.Most recently he has completed a seed commission for National Theatre Wales. Mikelearned his trade as a novelist by working as a freelance publisher’s reader,editor and rewrite man. With his former writing partner he wrote novels under avariety of pseudonyms including Rafe Quilty and Jericho Hood. When the BBCcontacted him some years ago to ask him if he really was that Mike Dorrell whohad novelized the Dick Barton Radio Series, he decided to return to novelwriting. Tonight, he will read from his new novel, George and Nye and Betty. Mostfeatured readings are followed by an open reading. Theevent is free and open to the public. His two chapbooks, Come Kanab (Dusi-e/chaps Kollectiv,2007) and 3by3by3 (Beardof Bees, 2010), are freely available on the web. He also curates theblogzine 3by3by3, a poetic experiment inhuman/machine collaboration. Ashley Seitz Kramer, originally from Ohio, earned her MFA fromthe Vermont College of Fine Arts, and has won the Ruth Stone Prize,the Schiff Prize, the Utah Writers’ Contest, and the Zone 3 Press First BookAward. Her book, Museum of Distance, was published in 2015 andwas a finalist for the Utah Book Award. Her poetry and prose are widelypublished in print and online, and she is currently at work on a second book ofpoems, entitled Haptikos. When she is not writing, she wears manyprofessional hats: she teaches college writing (and has done so for over twelveyears), serves as an assistant dean at Westminster College, and she’s athird-year doctoral student in Education, Culture, and Society at theUniversity of Utah, where she focuses on critical race feminism, queertheory, and anti-oppressive pedagogies and practices. How to Make a Bird with TwoHands (Word Works, 2012) won the Washington Prize and the just-released Addendumto a Miracle (Waywiser, 2017) was awarded the Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize,with Gjertrud Schnackenberg serving as the contest judge. His poems have appeared in magazinesincluding Ploughshares, Poetry,FIELD, The New Republic, The Iowa Review, The ThreepennyReview, and The Yale Review. He is a graduate of thedoctoral program in Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Utah,and a former editor at Quarterly West.
