A friend of mine in Mississippi tipped me off to this.... I just got the
Apex AD-1100w DVD player. Wal Mart was selling them for $69. It doesnt
come region free from the factory, but with a simple upgrade it is... You
have to download a file off the net (its only about 500k), burn it to a CDr,
then insert it into the player, and about 30 seconds later, you'll have a DVD
player that is region free-- And will play Pal or NTSC DVD's, and even
convert that signal either way!! This DVD player will play just about
anything ... MP3's, windows media files, CDrs, CDRW's, DVDrs, it'll even show
jpeg picture files. Theres no Wal Mart near me, so my friend shipped me one
from MS. However -- apparently Apex has changed this model, and you have to
look for one with a certain serial number on it, for this to work. I dont
have all the details in front of me, but there has been some hardcore
discussion about this on some dvd player newsgroup. If anyone needs more
info, i'll dig it up and send yr way.
Now i'm waiting for my copies of Lynch's Eraserhead and Lost Highway, and the
uncut Eyes Wide Shut (none of which are available here) to show up. :-)
