i've calmed a bit from my dandy time in nyc last week, which included zorn
leading cobra at tonic (12 piece including dresser, courvossier, feldman,
ibarra, friedlander, honda, roberto rodriguez), the wollensons (avant swamp
funk) w/ tony scherr on gtr at 55 bar and the frisell trio with k.
wollenson and scherr at the vanguard. frisell was aug 15th i think. petra
haden, charlie's daughter, was invited up twice during the second set,
singing moon river and when i wish upon a star. for the encore, frisell and
scherr both picked up acoustic guitars. some guy out in the audience
shouted, "need a bass player?" frisell looked out, a bit annoyed, then
said, "sure, come on." it was charlie haden, just over from his gig with
rubalcaba at the blue note. they played some country-ish thing that haden
seemed to struggle with at the turnaround. for his solo, haden called the
others off ("i got it. i got it.") then went unaccompanied for at least
five minutes, riffing on that line first recorded as his solo on "ramblin'"
by ornette. a good time was had by all.
