Hi, Just checked the Tzadik website and there's already new items for Feb and March. Among them, Kramer, Ben Perowsky (I don't know what to expect from him as a composer) and... John Zorn: "Masada Anniversary edition vol. 2 - Voices in the Wilderness" Although I know I'll finally buy them, anyone else thinks that the Masada-related stuff is getting a bit overwhelming? I bet many of us would appreciate more NC live albums with some unreleased material than the whole Masada assault. But I'll probably take the bait again... Reissues and Comps This has been a great year for reissuesall the ESP and Actuel disks in particular, but other important reissues also. 1. An Anthology of Noise and Electronic Music/First A-Chronology, Sub Rosathe idea of an a-chronological ordering of music is superb and necessary. Were too hung up on dates rather than streams of influence. The aforementioned Jeck/Otomo/Tetreault appears here as does the Mumma and Pauline Ontiverosplus early works by the Russolo brothers, Pousseur, Cage, and Varese. The Ikeda piece is not well-chosen but the rest are. 2. Albert Ayler, Nuits de la Fondation Maeght 1970, Watermy favorite Ayler of all. 3. Eternity was awful and Transcendence not much betterboth also on Sepia Tone. Revelations 1. Ocora releases 2. The Necks (bought Sex and want more) 3. Ethiopiques 1-11I owe a big thanks to the person who turned me on to the Allegro site where I got all of these. Thanks again. 4. The Silk Road on Smithsonian Folkwayswonderful collection of central Asian music. Ive played it consistently all year. 5. Ustad Mohammad Omar, Virtuoso from Afghanistan, Smithsonian Folkwaysfeatures Zakir Hussain and recalls what traditional music must have been like in this country pre-Taliban. Sorry to have missed: 1. Ekkehard Ehlers, Plays, Staubgoldwill get my copy sometime soon, but couldnt manage for this list. Liked all the stuff I heard previously on the Staubgold comp put out on the Wire.

18. Pierre Henry, Mix 04.0 Box, Phillips FranceThe Fragments for Artaud is the real winner here. We all need a bit more Artaud in these moral times. Perhaps we could use rats to inscribe the text of To Have Done With the Judgment of God into Rumsfelds chest. Great collection that also includes the 2CD recording of the 1977 composition Dieu ironically enough. 19. Merzbow, Amlux, Important Records 20. Polwechsel/Fennesz, Wrapped Islands, Erstwhilereference to Christo. Someone should write a paper about how avant musicians like to ratchet up the seriousness of their work by referencing art objects. This is easy listening Erstwhile and damn good too. 21. Tae-hwan Kang, Seven Breath, News Entertainmentseven pieces of solo alto sax. 22. Tabla Beat Science, Live at Sterns Grove, San Francisco, Axiom/Palm Picturesthe much maligned Laswell never sounds all that good live, but this one works pretty well, especially after the studio touch ups. Zakir Hussain and Sultan Khan steal the show, but Laswell has a stellar moment on Secret Channel. Could have been whittled down to one CD if the superfluous DJ Disk had been DJ Deleted. 23. Gordon Mumma, Live-Electronic Music, TzadikIm partial to the cut on the Sub Rosa comp but this is excellent as well, particularly Than Particle. 24. Van Bergen/Prins/Fennesz, Dawn, Grobundoubtedly weve heard better by any of these artists, but this one works pretty well in my opinion. 25. Peter Brotzmann, William Parker, Michael Wertmuller, Nothung, In Tone Music.

9. Luc Ferrari, Cycle Des Souvenirs (1995-2000), Blue ChopsticksBeautiful concrete. 10. Iannis Xenakis, Persepolis & Remixes, AsphodelI already owned the Fractal release of Persepolis, so the remixes were the prize here. Particularly strong outings by Otomo Yoshihide, Merzbow, Ryoji Ikeda, and Francisco Lopez. 11. Cosmos, Tears, ErstwhileThe most challenging and difficult release yet by this label. Very spare delicate vocal sounds by Ami Yoshida with Sachiko M on sine wave sampler and contact mics. Beautiful. 12. Poire Z, +, Erstwhilethree pieces by the quartet of Erik M, Gunter Muller, and Voice Crack with Otomo on one, Sachiko on another, and Christian Marclay on the third. Superb. 13. Otomo Yoshihides New Jazz Ensemble, Dreams, Tzadikfree improv meets Japan pop. Vocal work by Phew and Togawa Jun. Otomo is the only one capable of recovering a tradition without making it sound too much like an idiom. Flutter may not have worked so well, but this one does. 14. Otomo Yoshihides New Jazz Quintet, Live, DIWbrilliant cover of Jim ORourkes Eureka. If theres a better, more inspired tenor player than Kikuchi Naruyoshi, Id be surprised. 15. John Zorn, IAO, TzadikMy favorite Zorn release in years. 16. Yoshihide, Jeck, Tetreault, Invisible Architecture 1, Audiospherea sub-project for Sub Rosa and very short but also very good. Much better than the Vainio/Fennesz release. 17. Merzbow, A Taste of&, Mego.

Faves for 2002: In Order: 1. The Fire this Time (2CD) Hidden ArtÂ—Absolutely essential document to have in these pre-Iraq war times. Grant Wakefield puts together the narrative collage that accounts for the destruction in Iraq over the past 12 years by coalition forces and sanctions. Musical textures provided by Bola, Amba, The Higher Intelligence Agency, Soma, Pan Sonic, and Aphex Twin, among others. The second CD is a bit uneven but it does include a recording of prayer calls in Baghdad. The first CD is simply the best and most important thing IÂ’ve heard all year. If aesthetics is not simply the worship of art objects but the capacity to affect an audience, this CD wins hands down. 2. MIMEO/John Tilbury, The Hands of Caravaggio, ErstwhileÂ—The best improv recording of the year and sure to be a musical classic for a long time. The liner notes by Tilbury on the website put to shame those who would say that theory doesnÂ’t belong with art, that music should be heard without reference to ideas. He cites Marcuse and Murdoch while also noting an essay by Cardew, dated sources to be certain, but also useful ones. RoweÂ’s references are completely postmodern hereÂ—the recently discovered painting, the return to the concerto, all within the context of an electronic Â“orchestraÂ” flirting with overwhelming TilburyÂ’s piano. That and Tilbury must contend with Cor Fuhler playing inside the instrument, posing yet another obstacle. ItÂ’s often said that MIMEO doesnÂ’t sound as good recorded as live. This was an occasion where things were reversed: The recording was apparently much better than the live performance. Does this confirm Borges dictum about Pierre Menard? 3. Improvised Music from Japan (10 CDs), Improvised Music from JapanÂ—This is a crucial document of mostly electroacoustic improv from Japan. Music for 50 Imacs by Yasuhiro Otani is one of my faves. This box is one that IÂ’ll return to again and again in the next several years. 4. Otomo Yoshihide, Ensemble Cathode, Improvised Music from JapanÂ—continues the cathode project with three new compositions. Spare beautiful pieces with large ensembles. Nishi YokoÂ’s koto playing is gorgeous, as is Ishikawa Ko on sho, and Yoshigaki Yasuhiro on waterphone. 5. Phil Niblock, G2,44+/x2, MoikoiÂ—Bought this recently and havenÂ’t stopped playing it. Two extended guitar drones, headed by Rafael Toral and including Robert Poss, Susan Stenger, David Frist and Kevin Drumm, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, and Alan Licht on the Â“massed version.Â” Brilliant. 6. Kim Cascone & Scanner, The Chrystalline Address, Sub RosaÂ—Two extended electroacoustic works: Behavioral Sink and Atavistic Endeavor. Gorgeous microsound pieces. 7. Rafael Toral, The Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance, TouchÂ—officially released in 2001. Got my copy in the spring and it usually accompanies me to bed. Â“Mixed States UncodedÂ” includes the recording of silence during a space shuttle mission. 8. Kevin Drumm, Sheer Hellish Miasma, MegoÂ—An electronic ode to gothic metal. Dense, rich textures. Gothic Â“KDÂ” written on black cardboard. Title is poorly applied. Really beautiful noise screes on this one.
