Sorry to leap into the fray way after the fact, but I was distracted. To bring the topic back "on": The Good the Bad and the Ugly" commissioned by McCann Erikson Ad Agency, for Camel cigarettes(but never used), on FilmWorks I ...and the 31 cues written for Weiden and Kennedy, for products that shall remain nameless, on Film Works III "I have a very special relationship with the commercial house of Weiden and Kennedy - when they need something off-the-wall, they call me. My deal is simple, but unheard of in the commercial music field. I never do demos - I never 'redo' anything. I do the job once - I do it the way I want - and I get paid whether they use the music or not. Hardly the description of a commercial sellout. Weiden and Kennedy is probably the only agency who would do such a thing. Most commercial houses find it impossible to trust an artist in this way, but Weiden and Kennedy has proved that one can work in the world of advertising and still retain one's integrity and creativity." Hmmm...I have mixed feelings on this topic. But do I think the above posting reveals a little bit of a double-standard. I think we should remember that while these big artists may not need the money, they too (as much as we may dislike their music or status) are creative individuals who want their music heard and promoted. Why should only {more obscure} people like Zorn be excepted from criticism if they're doing the same things as Sting and Madonna??? Also, there are plenty of small acts on major labels who wouldn't have records if it weren't for the successes of major artists. Don't get me wrong; I'm definitely mostly pro-indie, anti-major but there's no denying the truth of this system. For more extensive information, go to http://SICPP.org Summer Institute for Contemporary Piano Performance, Stephen Drury, Artistic Director New England Conservatory, Boston, MA Monday, June 23 - Saturday, June 28, 2003 An intensive performance seminar on music of the twentieth century for pianists of all levels. Faculty: Stephen Drury, John Mark Harris, Shannon Wettstein, Yukiko Takagi Special guest artists: HaydÃ©e Schvartz and Emanuele Arciuli Composer in residence: Lee Hyla WORKSHOPS: Up to fifteen active participants will be chosen to participate in five days of masterclasses given each morning. Participants will be coached by Stephen Drury, members of the SICPP faculty, and guest artists on a broad range of repertoire from the last 100 years. Participants will also receive two private lessons with members of the SICPP faculty during the afternoons. Auditors, who do not perform in the morning classes, are also welcome, and may arrange to schedule lessons during the week with the SICPP faculty at NEC Summer School's standard rate. Selected students will be invited to perform on the final evening concert. CONCERT SERIES: The Summer Institute for Contemporary Piano Performance will present six evening concerts of modern music for piano. Members of the SICPP 2003 artist faculty will perform alongside new music ensembles Callithumpian Consort and the BSC, presenting music by Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Giacinto Scelsi, John Cage, George Crumb, Frederic Rzewski, and others. A featured highlight will be the piano music of composer-in-residence Lee Hyla. All concerts are FREE! COMPOSERS: Composers are invited to audit the course. Lee Hyla will be the 2003 SICPP Composer in Residence; Hyla's piano works will be presented as part of the evening concert series. CALL FOR SCORES: SICPP is seeking scores for piano solo to be performed during the course. Scores can be of a range of difficulties, including beginning level. The selected works will be performed by advanced students attending the course and discussed by composer-in-residence Lee Hyla. hi peeps, i've got a request for you guys, which in essence is the flip side to Skip's idea late last year. while Skip was interested in getting an idea of all the good stuff you don't usually hear on the radio, i'm curious about the gems that ARE on the FM and oldies play list. I don't usually listen to the radio so... any ideas on songs that i should check out would be appreciated. the less obscure the better, stuff that's hidden in plain sight so to speak.
