why do free jazz groups have pee-pee-go-poo-poo-silly-names?

I love Zorn's work, and much of the Tzadik catalogue, but I'm not as interested in the other players in the free jazz/modern improv scene. Still, by virtue of being on this list and perusing mags like "signal to noise" and other media sources, I've noticed this trend- many (most) of the artists and ensembles that work in the free jazz/modern improv/avant garde/modern classical/etc. mode gravitate toward silly/stupid names for their ensembles and records- why? Why is it that the most brilliant composers and players put out records with names like "The baby-rape arkestra" and "Tiny Elephant go poo poo", and other equally silly/stupid things? There's no question that Zappa was a brillaint composer and writer- yet why did the majority of his catalogue have song titles and content so "south park" that they make Weird Al's lyrics and song titles look like Cole Porter? Here's my .02- I think that because these artists know that they're doing highbrow, high-concept, academic music, they feel that they have to (over)compensate by using novelty names and silly-stupid record titles. If Chris Speed's new record is a collection of modal excercises and pretentious, academic skronk-funk, he'll feel that calling it something equally academic like "fluxus/nexus diaspora" would be too pretentious, so he tried to "lighten it up" by coming up with a name like "My colostomy sandwhich" or something. Thoughts?

Last I heard there was a meta-album due out this year in three parts. They were supposed to break the year into quarters for the release. The first part was due in April, which isn't making me hopeful for the veracity of the information I've heard. Yeah! What ever happened to sublimely pretentious titles like "At About This Time Mozart Was Dead and Joseph Conrad Was Sailing the Sea Learning English" and "A Midnight Rain of Green Wrens at the World's Tallest Building?" Good old John Cale...who I love, but his "NY in the 60s" stuff has silly names as such. Though he did write a song called "The Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy." It helps to keep it light, methinks. Btw, What does lister think of Cale? I've really gotten into his (stylistically erradic) solo work as of late.

Hi I am a big fan of Van der Graaf Generator. I have the 1971 Belgian TV DVD (30'). They do Theme One and Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers. Quite excellent quality for a 1971 Belgian TV broadcast (a little tiny bit 'smeary'). WELL WORTH owning if you are a fan. I haven't seen the official release of them in France in 1975, but I've had a video tape of this for years. Good (not as professional quality looking though) TV broadcast. I assume that the DVD will be reasonably good. It's them doing all of "Godbluff". good lord, man, what else do you need to know? :-) Steve F.

The technical details that are given: DVD-Video [DVD 5] black & white NTSC 4:3 Step Across The Border [1:23:49] bonus tracks [29:57] Running time: 1:55:23 Original Version [English] Subtitles: French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish [on/off] As my DVD player is region free, I cannot actually see if it is really for all regions.
