"creatively" vs. in a metal context. tee hee hee. but weasel walter of the flying luttenbachers uses an odd-sized set with a double bass drum pedal (and possibly no snare, i don't remember) in a freee jazz setting on their LP 'trauma.' zach hill of hella sounds like he uses a double bass drum, but it's just an inhumanly fast right foot. i have a friend who played drums in a free/fake jazz/noise band out here and used double bass drums in a lineup with another drummer and two saxophonists. i'm trying to think of more examples... there have to be some. wy

The other day I was flipping through a copy of Rolling Stone at the barber and read through a review of the Yes New York album. Surprisingly enough, and this is criminal, they never even mentioned the existence of the No New York album, or any historical background whatsoever. I am also wondering if anyone has any comment on Miike's latest film, 'the happiness of the katakuris.' They are, of course, very well worth supporting and the CD actually also looks pretty cool: Blevin Blechtum, Charming Hostess, Godspeed You! Electric Masada tomorrow night

Looking forward to seeing Electric Masada for the first time tomorrow night at Tonic. I notice that the line-up (John Zorn (alto sax), Marc Ribot (guitar), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Kenny Wollesen (drums), Jamie Saft (keyboard / synthesizer / lap-steel guitar) & Trevor Dunn (bass)) is almost the same as "The Gift" except for Wollenson instead of Baron. Is this the normal line-up for Electric Masada? Does "The Gift" sound anything like Electric Masada? I haven't yet heard either. I read a review of "The Gift" somewhere that said it was sweet, beautiful easy-on-the-ears music, like a "gift" to listeners for listening to his more difficult music. Any truth in that? I need to get some Zorn that my wife will be willing to listen to... besides Masada. I can only play Naked City's "nice" songs when she's around...... Paul

EM has a more electric Miles feel than the Gift. It sounds more improvised and stretched out as skip said. It may even, dare I say, have a more jam band feel at times, though with a Masada (Zorn) feel and considerably better musicianship all around. I enjoyed even the poor quality live recording I heard; making me really want to hear an album. I can't decide if I would rather have the polished sound of a studio album or the energy from a live recording from this band. The Gift is definitely Zorn that you can take home to mom (though my mom now plays Masada, quartet and chamber, at dinner parties). The Gift is very relaxed and has some very tasty playing by Ribot in particular. Very Martin Denney sounding, though with a darker Zorn vibe. I love exotica, but if you don't then you may not like this album. I play it for chill music or something to work with. It is suffciently relaxing, but I can tune it out need be. I can't say that about many Zorn albums, except for Redbird (which I enjoy). skip is correct, give or take medeski that is the common line-up for electric masada. except when i caught them on new years dave douglas was featured on trumpet and ben perowsky filled in for kenny wolleson who opted instead to lead his own gig at either joes pub or the 55 bar, my mind is failing me as to which one. also they did perform a piece from the gift on new years which was the highlight of the first set, because of ribot's roaring solo. if my memory serves me correct it is either track 2 or 3 on the gift, which ever one has a consistent amount of 'piercing' ambient noise from jamie saft throughout the track. also there were rumors going around last year this time that the group was to record in the winter. any truth as to if this ever happened? darryl
