I think Jerry Hunt's great & I thought so long before I moved to
Texas, where he lived for most of his life.
Phalba's pretty different from the Song Drapes. It's all music for
live instrumentalists some with electronics, maybe some without (I'm
out of town right now and as much as I like his music, I didn't bring
any Jerry Hunt CDs with me. I didn't bring any CDs, but that's
another story.). So it's related but quite different in how it sounds
overall. I like the pieces on Phalba, but it's not all in the same
vein like the Song Drapes disc.
For me, the best-sounding Hunt recording of his electronic works is
Haramand Planes: Three Translation Links, originally released by
What's Next, then those discs were taken on by OO Discs, I'm not sure
how readily available it is.
For what it's worth, Hunt's artistic executor, Rod Stasick, says that
most of Hunt's releases have something technically wrong with them:
recording quality, misreadings from the scores or, in the case of
Haramand Planes, mislabelled tracks. There are apparently only 3-5
different Song Drapes as far as formal distinctions go, though the CD
has more tracks than that and there's no literal repetitions of music
that I've noticed. But then, I don't think I've heard the disc since
he told me that either.
Bests,
Herb
