One-stop shopping for inside & outside music?

Hey list, the Christmas merchandise-wallow is over for another year and there's not much of a dent in my music want list. The Best of 2002 lists just make it worse. I'd like to do some one-stop shopping and not pile up a bunch of shipping charges by buying from five or six etailers. Can someone recommend an online music retailer where I can get the widest range of stuff, from the Dylan Bootleg Series #5 to Eyvind Kang's "Live Low to the Earth in the Iron Age"? CD Universe has a lot of my list, but not all of it. (They don't have the Kang set or anything on Okkadisk, for instance.) Also: apparently I need to get some Sun City Girls into my life. Does anybody know a seller with copies of "330,003 Crossdressers..." available? Also: after seeing "Minority Report" and "Catch Me If You Can," I'm beginning to think that this John Williams feller may have a future in the movie-score business after all. Happy nude year. One of the features of Reichel's guitars is that the strings extend beyond the bridge, which allows for (i) secondary tones to be generated while playing in the traditional manner and (ii) playing on the wrong side of the bridge. This gives Reichel's guitar a unique and immediately recognizable sound. (As recognizable as D. Bailey; the instant you hear it, you can say, "This is Hans Reichel.") However relative to the bizarre sounds of his daxophone, the sounds of his guitar work are not quite as alien to this world. The style of Hans Reichel's guitar playing is (as I am sure you can guess from the fact that the bulk of his releases are on FMP) mostly improvisational. But Reichel's songs are improvisations on a melody. His songs are not harsh, not dissonant. On the contrary, they are some very beautiful melodies that snake their way through the improvisations. My recommendation for Reichel's guitar work is the split-cd "The Death of the rare bird Ymir"/"Bonobo Beach" (FMP, CD 54 1993 (1979/81), cd). This is two albums of his best playing on one cd. I have heard some people say that "Bonobo" (a distinct album from "Bonobo Beach") which was never reissued on cd, is his best album. Here I totally disagree. Surely Reichel had some input into which of the lps in his FMP canon were selected for rerelease on compact disc in the 1990's. He picked the best ones. It is easy to hear that the idiosyncratic techniques of guitar playing that appear on the earlier albums culminate in a mature and fully-developed style on "The Death of the rare bird Ymir"/"Bonobo Beach". My second recommendation (after this one) is the new daxophone cd on a|l|l, an imprint of FMP, titled "Yuxo". It's very interesting to see hear how Reichel's approach to the daxophone evolved in the intervening 10 years. If there can be any criticism of "Yuxo", it is that the album is too "studio slick", a claim which could never be made regarding his guitar albums since they are all (at least all the FMP ones), "recorded as heard, no overdubbing". I just got done reading this, Caetano Veloso's autobio/history of troplicalia/overview of Brazillian culture and politics, and was wondering if anyone else has read it. Personally, I love his records dearly, but the book doesn't make me much like him personally. He comes off as something of a coffeehouse intellectual chowderhead in spots, a dilletante in others, and -- at his best -- somebody who really loves the music of his country. skip h NP: the raymond scott orchestrette, PUSHBUTTON PARFAIT

Hi all, yesterday I was searching what the list has had to say on some Zorn's past issues, and start browsing the list archives which prior to 2002 seem to be only available in a digest form which is a little bit of a pain to use. I converted those archives to (somewhat) valid mbox files which I could browse and search using my email client, and then converted then to html browsable files. If some of you are interested in getting those files, I can make them available, those are the list archives from 1996 to may 2002 (since then they are accessible on xmission). Greg

it sounds very unique and interesting - even better than the daxophone - which is challenging too - but cannot be heard frequently because he concentrates on the dax. Recommendations are WICHLINGHAUSER BLUES (1973), BONOBO (1975) and THE DEATH OF THE RARE BIRD YMIR (1979). <<<....I heard thatcalvin weston was maybe gonna play (alongside ben perowsky) with electric masada at Tonic on NYE. can someone who was there confirm or deny?>>> unfortunately no... though perowsky with baptista was quite a treat. i am not very familiar with perowsky as a 'jazz' drummer; i am more familiar with him on the elysian fields releases. however he was quite spectacular tuesday evening and i was pleasantly surprised by what he offered, though i was disappointed to learn kenny wolleson would not be playing when i entered the venue. supposedly he was across town at the 55 bar with tony scherr and others from 11 till 4am, but we did not make it over there. i would compose a full on review of the show, however this was my first time seeing all the musicians in person so my review would be no more than a gushing of excitement. but i will mention it was a really, really great show and besides masada pieces there was at least one gift piece (snakecharmer i believe. my disc is back at school so i can not compare), possibly two. marc ribot's trio consisted of trevor dunn & bruce cox (?, i know the last name was cox. large african american fellow who was really laying it down) and it was predominately 'rock'-ish but there was a middle eastern peice towards the middle. yuka honda's group was entertaining however i left just after their first metal piece, the first two being cibo mato like tunes w/ asian girls singing. i imagine their set got quite better through the early hours of the morning. -darryl. ps. i noticed a couple photographers, are any of you out there? i would be interested in seeing some of your photographs...
