Having actually listened to an advance of the disk, I can't say it's bluegrass. The closest touchstone I can provide is that it's "Ghost Town" with a band - a pretty impressionistic take on Appalachian music. Another new Bill Frisell

Hello. What about the new Bill Frisell CD called "The Willies"? I saw it in a record shop in England more than a month ago. Is it good?? I have been extremely dissapointed by the last string of his records, but he is still one of the best guitar players in the world, so I'm expecting sooner or later something cool will pop up. Is "The Willies" it, or is it more dreadfull muzak like the recent Elvin Jones collaboration? As Julien explained, Rarum is a new series from ECM featuring the artists themselves programming their own favorite tracks. The usual suspects are featured in the initial batch: Keith Jarrett (2CDs), Jan Garbarek (2CDs), Chick Corea, Art Ensemble (which includes Roscoe and Lester solo tracks), etc. There are more coming later. Check the ECM website for full details. In the case of the Frisell disc, the mystery tracks you mention are from Paul Motian discs on which Frisell played. I think "Mandeville" is from 'Psalm' and "India" is from 'It Should Have Happened a Long Time Ago,' if memory serves (don't have any of these handy here at the office). There's also at least one track on there from a Gavin Bryars disc on which Frisell was featured prominently, and nice liner notes by Bill that explain how the relationships he made at ECM have lasted through the duration of his career to date (people from Nonesuch, management and booking all worked there at some point or another). Now, if only we could convince ECM to reissue Music Improvisation Company and the Derek Bailey / Dave Holland guitar and cello records... Robin Holcomb, at last

Years and years after her last album, vocalist-pianist-composer Robin Holcomb is finally set to release a new disc of her lovely, melancholy songs. Nonesuch is going to issue 'The Big Time' on June 11. The songs are drenched in Holcomb's standard deep rootsiness - some of them are actually songs from the Harry Smith anthology - but they're also marked by her unique harmonic sense, with unusual chords and voicings in abundance. The album somehow once again manages to transcend the wide gap between the singer-songwriter format and more adventurous fare, though Zornlisters who find little to like about recent Frisell and Horvitz projects may just scratch their heads. Hard for me to say much more than that, since I'm listening to it for the first time, but it very much picks up where 'Rockabye' left off in 1992. The band is Zony Mash (Wayne Horvitz, Keith Lowe, Timothy Young and Andy Roth) with guest appearances by Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco band), Doug Wieselman, Danny Barnes and Eyvind Kang. Sonic Youth have really opened their horizons within their own special idiosincracy. It's probably one of the most evolutive bands in the "rock" scene, IMHO.
