Overdue CD reissues, Gang of four

The 1995 Infinite Zero CD rerelease of Entertainment by the Gang of Four sounds OK although I prefer the original vinyl because it has a punchier sound compared to the more compressed sound of the CD. I thought it was no longer available because of the problems Henry Rollins had with his reissue label,however, it looks as if there are still copies around on the net. It is a better purchase than the clumsily sequenced Rhino greatest hits 100 Flowers bloom. It is couple with the Yellow e.p, however, a coupling with the 1st single on the great Fast label would be nicer. Boredoms quie brutally around the middle of the 90s and The Ex more slowly. The Boredoms discography is mainly divided into two parts: pre 95, being totally crazy berserk comic book punk stuff, drawing on many genres. Post 95, being heavily inspired by krautrock, drone, minimalism and certainly techno and modern dance. Of the first, their absolut nmasterpiece is "Chocolate Synthesizer" from 1994 and of the second there is only two full albums so far (a new should be on the way) "Super AE" from 1998 and "Vision Creation Newsun" from 1999. Both are excellent, but you might want to give them a listen before you decide which one two pick up. The Ex started out as very, very simpel punk with very political lyrics, and slowly over the years developed a style mixing punk, experimental stuff, jazz, world music and many other things. For some of the really early stuff go for "The Dignity Of Labour". Their first real masterpiece and you can hear them already starting to stretch out. Another favorite from the 80s is incredible double CD "Joggers & Smoggers" which has pure punk songs mixed with many, many different things. My favorite of he newest stuff is still "Starter Alternators" from 1998. That's the one that really turned me on to them. Like Sonic Youth, Boredoms and The Ex both have a huge pack of side projets. Unlike SY, almost all of them are worth checking out, but it would be too much for me to get into here... BTW, Whatever happened to the "In The Fishtank" with Sonic Youth & Friends (= Han Bennink, The Ex plus other Ducth hip cats?!) I've heard Frisell mentioned in reverent tones by more than few people (most of whom are not inhabitants of Planet Zorn). They lump him in with Metheny, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Robben Ford, etc., as one of the big names in guitar jazz. While Frisell is not exactly in the same camp stylistically he is obviously as famous and respected by the people who listen to such artists. harras might not be an altogether great record, but i do rather like it. quiet, interesting, and only example of this line-up you're gonna find. What does everyone think of the four EPs that SY put out on their own label. I have the first three and enjoy them mostly, but there are portions I can do with out. Worth the ten bucks but not essential, I believe. I'm curious to see what various people who like different facets of SY's output think. Zach

But he did mention that Toshinoro Kondo probably has a stack of the "Japan Japon" record lying under his bed, but apart from that he had no idea how I could find them....! Does anybody here have any old ICP recordings and might be able to comment on them?
