Michiyo Yagi

With all the top 10 talk, I've started on another cycle through the Japan Improv set, and I was very impressed today with Disk 8, which is all koto and shamisen. One of the koto players is Michiyo Yagi, and as I perused the japan improv web site, I see that she has an album on Tzadik. Anyone heard this? Any comments? A short trawl through her discography reveals a group called Kokoo, two koto and one shakuhachi. One of their albums (http://www.japanimprov.com/indies/sevenseas/supernova.html) contains songs by Hendrix, Led Zep, Zappa (Peaches en Regalia!), Pink Floyd (One of these Days) and the Beatles. I saw this show too in san jose a couple of nights ago, and had pretty much the same impressions as Jorge. STGM were really good. all excellent musicians, and an especially great live act. Go see them if you can! Skeleton Key sounded just like the early 90's grunge bands to me. A little Nivana here, a little Soundgarden and STP there, (all complete with the worlbley guitar intos and predictable loud jams:)). but i've not brought macca down with a word or two. wishing more of someone is not a condemnation. and it's CERTAINLY not based on wealth. i expect far less from the wealthy. i do, i suppose, expect more of artists in come cases, because they are, at times, the ones who are reflecting and evaluating the depth of emotion in our shared experience. in that regard, i would have been much more impressed with sir paul had he said 'holy shit' (as did you when your friend died) then 'what a drag.' 'holy shit' sounds more like someone caring to me. maybe that's just a generational thing, though, and i'll drop that one. but because he's an artist who might give more thought than at least some other people to things like the sanctity of memories of the dead, friendship above squabbling, love over property. i've never thought he was the deepest of rivers, though, so i'm not entirely surprised. if we all live in one big glass house, than what's the point of having a cliche about it? I had heard Music For on the radio (it was the 70's) and it was the first 'minimalism' I had ever heard and I was instantly entranced. I searched for it for a long time and couldn't find it. I was so happy when I saw what they had actually found for me...I was beginning to think that I had *imagined* this music. (the sad ending is that my parents then had to hear me play this album through our shared walls for the next 2 years constantly...they hated it!) :-) Steve
