I went on Sat. night, and it was OK. Console heavy, but there was enough coin op/NES to make it interesting. No mention of the 2600, but I guess when most games didn't have any music for that platform, you have to understand why. There was a ton of game music that I had never even played the game from, like Final Fantasy, and WoW. The MC (Missile Command? No, Master of Ceremonies) was some guy who worked composing music for games, and the last couple of songs he pulled out a guitar and played along. He pranced around the stage like he was a rockstar, but it really just made him look like a doofus. Biggest hit of the night was some guy who played the SMB music on the piano while blindfolded . I didn't go, but I had press passes. I really, really, really, dislike Tommy Tallarico (the guy over VGL), so I tend to steer clear of anything he gets his hand into. I'm sure it was good and fun, but I can't help but think mean things when I see the guy. We've had it out in public a couple of times, actually. The story is long, but just know that he's a total self-serving jerk. That piano kid is awesome though, I've met him down at E3 and he's truly amazing. I guess they didn't play the theme from MULE for the Atari 8-bit? :) Actually, there was some great music with some other games as well, such as Seven Cities of Gold and the Alternate Reality series. - Trevor Sean McLachlan wrote:

I agree with your assessment and funny enough, I think my two older kids agree too Sean. It was a fun show, but for me the real enjoyment came in the first 10 minutes of the classics and watching that idiot attempt play Space Invaders along with the later Frogger match-up. The RPG stuff was completely lost on me. The first piano solo, although skilled, had nothing I recognized. As for Trevor's M.U.L.E. suggestion, hell yeah!!! http://www.c64audio.com/free/cd_new/cd/8bitweapon/MULE%20(Bitblaster%20mix).... I thought it was also interesting the entire night was Namcoless. Considering the fact that Namco is trying to make a buck off of arcade ringtones, I figured they wanted cash to use their music. Nevertheless, this is a fact that is not easily explained to my Pacmaniac son. Sean McLachlan wrote:

No Namco, and no Sega either. I really laughed at the end when the MC asked for requests. The place roared "Sonic!" and he blew that off and just played what they were going to play anyway. -- Sean McLachlan Pete Ashdown wrote:

I talked with Tommy T. about that a couple of years ago, actually. Namco was evidently the only publisher that VGL approached which found no promotional value in major symphonies worldwide playing snippets of their music while giant video screens advertise their intellectual properties. This will come as no surprise to anyone who has worked with Namco-Bandai recently :) Clark
So where were you guys when I brought 8-bit Peoples in from New York City to play at the Urban Lounge?!? Didn't make any money at it, but I had a great time. Here's a recording of Nullsleep (of 8-bit Peoples) performing in SLC on August 9th, 2003 at my demoparty Pilgrimage: <http://tinyurl.com/k6fj> Unfortunately we didn't get a recording made at the Urban, which also included Bit Shifter. See their home page: <http://www.8bitpeoples.com/> I could get them into SLC for another show; they'd love to play for us again, but it would be nice to get the word out to people who care enough to show up to the show this time :-). Although I was considering flying them out just to play a show at a club as a party. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
