Dave, I purchased my TV-102 because of the good reviews in both Sky and Telescope and Astronomy magazine. I wanted something portable so I could take out on a moments notice and something I could take out and enjoy when the moon was up. In fact, I discovered the moon is an interesting object to view and not just light pollution! Anyway, I'm really glad I bought it because I like the f/8.6 focal ratio. It gives sharp constrasty views especially on planets and double stars. I also like the wide field views of the star-fields in the Milky Way. I've seen the Bernard's backward E in the scope. I also like M24, the Sagittarius star cloud. In Feb 2002, I took my 102 down to St. George and I tried a few double stars like Rigel and Castor. I've been hooked on double-stars ever since. One thing I should tell you is that TeleVue has excellent customer support. Also, get the StarBeam. It really works great. The QuickPoint is a piece of junk. I went to the TeleVue website and found the comment you were referring to. I don't remember posting a statement on the TeleVue website but it could of been taken from the TeleVue yahoo group. I don't know of anybody else that has a TV-102 scope in Utah. I met a guy that had a TV-101 at the Mark Dakins star party a few years ago but I don't remember his name. I've seen some of newer NP-101s for sale because they want the TV-102 for visual work. The NP-101 is more for photography. If you want more information, you might want to join the TeleVue yahoo group. Some of the folks there are very knowledgable and friendly. Feel free to ask me any more questions. Dave, I fell in love with the TeleVue 85 when Al Nagler showed it to me at the '98 Texas Star Party. The only reason I didn't buy it was that I got a good deal on the TV-102 on AstroMart. The guy had just bought an NP-101 so he sold me his 102. If you are planning on traveling alot on airplanes then the TV-85 would be better. If I ever get to the Winter Star Party I may buy a TV-85. The TV-85 is short enough to take as a carry-on, Debbie

Brent, Thanks for the response. I figured you were busy or out of town. I got a chance to see Alpha Herculis Tuesday evening. Pretty double. 38 Lyncis was a nice double too. I worked my way through my AL doubles list from Bootes to Hercules. I really liked Epsilon Bootes too with the blue and yellow colors. I'll have to try that one in my 15". You showed me 95 Herculis last August. It was very colorful. Mu Draconis was also a pretty equal pair. I'll try for Zeta Bootes and Gamma Virginis next week if the seeing is good. If not, I'll try them with the 15" on the 30th or 31st. I need to get my galaxy fix soon but I will plan on observing a few doubles too. I wanted to ask you what is the limiting magnitude at the old airstrip southeast of St. George? I don't like that Black Rock road location. It is too windy and too close to the freeway. The old airstrip seems a bit safer to me. Debbie

Brent, Have you split Zeta Bootes lately? Do I need at least an 8inch to split it? What are your favorite spring doubles? I'm targeting the AL Doubles list but I like to try others if they are pretty and interesting. Debbie

Jim, It's difficult to say. The area has become quite a bit more developed since that map was drawn, and some of the side roads that I know exist, are not shown on the map. I would guess that the quarry is down Hogs back road, but I would use the odometer on your car and look for the orange sign mentioned in the directions, so as to make sure you are in the right place. I certainly don't see a side road of the right length on the map with a quarry marking. On the 1:100,000 map, they label the western half of Browns canyon road as "mountain meadows". My driving atlas labels it Browns Canyon for the entire length. The distance measurements that I give as exact numbers were measured by us with our car's odometer. Richard, I'm not sure how many people might actually come from SLAS and UVAA. The site is not huge, and too many vehicles could be an issue. Patrick, could you cut and paste the directions into your next News issue? Directions to the gravel quarry viewing site. Take I-80 East (past Park City exit) to Exit 147. (Rt. 40 East). Stay to the right. Head East to Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go left towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley. Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up. Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are. We had permission from the previous owners to set up here, but the current owners have not been asked. We tried once, and were unable to get past a secretary that was sure the answer would be "no". So, we try to be discrete when we go there, and leave nothing that would make them worry about what is happening up there at night :). This is only a star party. There are no amenities, and no camping. Let me emphasize, this is not a "spend the night and camp out" location. Allen and I will be there Friday, weather and family allowing. Saturday, we have family obligations, but I understand others may be there. This event is INSTEAD of The Wedge. The consensus at the meeting was that The Wedge would be too hot.
