This message was sent using ShareThis [http://www.sharethis.com] Add this info with the discovery a couple weeks ago of "vast" amounts of water stored 400 miles beneath the surface of Earth (google" Underground Oceans") and suddenly the "fable" of the ark and worldwide flood takes on a bit more credence.....

L&O

Today's L&O was, as usual, wonderful. I really enjoy mingling with the great and interesting folk that comprise this community, especially in daylight enjoying a good meal. In this digital age, online conversations sometimes lack the nuance and warmth that is often needed to firm up the bonds of friendship. Thanks to everyone who participated, and thanks to Chuck for bringing the PST and a few choice eyepieces, even if all we could make out was a (mostly) featureless orange ball through the clouds... :) /R

Vintage telescopes

Rich and I have talked briefly about possibly having a "vintage telescope" star-party, or maybe a "vintage" night at an already scheduled star party at SPOC or some other site. I recently bought a 1979 Criterion RV-6 Dynascope in excellent condition, and have Don's old Cave 10", which he kept in excellent shape all the years he owned it. Rich has both 6" and 8" Dynascopes. Many of you have older scopes that still perform flawlessly. Just yesterday I bought a 4" Dynascope from a seller on KSL, it too is in excellent condition and came with an original eyepiece. Around 55 years old or so! And I am working on a restoration of my old Edmund 4.25" Palomar Jr. Newtonian. It might be fun to have a night with a collection of telescopes say, 30 years old or older. Give people a chance to see what we used back in the "old days", and demonstrate that just because a telescope is old, doesn't mean it's not a good performer. Anyone who has looked through a Dynascope, or Siegfried's Clark, knows the truth of this. Any group interest in something like this? Owners of older scopes, what have you got? Roll-call, please post the details. Thanks!

An interesting article

This article points out a common occurrence in science. Models that are used to predict the future are notoriously fallible. They must be continually tweaked to make sense. This is the essence of science and the scientific method. Rarely do we get it right the first time. I bring this up so there can be an intelligent conversation about the topic. There is always way too much name calling and innuendo made by commenters, as can be seen in the comments section of this article. Please, lets have a civil conversation. Without civility there can be no unemotional, fact based debate. I for one would really like to hear the rational facts from both sides of this (unfortunately) hotly debated topic. Needs help with scope

Eric de Jonckheere (a fairly new members of SLAS) will be at SPOC this evening with a 22" Obsession dob. He'll also be bringing an Argo Navis digital setting circles system (http://www.obsessiontelescopes.com/accessories/ArgoNavis) which he is trying to install on the scope.
