ISS to cross the Sun

I just received a message from CalSky indicating ISS will transit the Sun this coming Friday at 16h52m43s MDT as seen from along a line stretching from here at SPOC, across the north end of Salt Lake International and on into the south end of Bountiful. Duration is predicted to be only 2.91s so don't blink. patrick

Is it still going to be visible from SPOC? Cory and I want to give it a try. Is anyone planning to get together for it? It's not surprising that ISON is not living up to expectations. What is surprising is that it is failing so spect act ularly . Now it is being suggested it isn't even going to be naked eye. ISON is supposed to be a first timer, and they usually perform better (i.e, more tail, more coma, etc). The studies suggest it is much more dust than ice. Do astronomers need to re-evaluate the comet models? On the other hand, the predicted meteor shower in January (as the earth passes through the debris field of Coment ISON might be worth seeing!!!

I saw Comet ISON 2013

I saw it! Perfect morning for it. I used Stellarium to help me find it. I saw very faint nebulosity at 69x right where it should have been (Meade 10" SCT 36mm 2" eyepiece). So I put my Nikon DSLR (D7000) on the telescope and got a few images. None of which are very compelling. Here's one: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/O8oNarfyfZAixnUpw_Rbft6uuN3FAlh2ZQMTG… (single image, 15 seconds, ISO 12,800, adjusted RAW image in Lightroom) If you use your imagination you can just make out the ghostly greenness just right of center. I'm going to try and stack a few to see what happens. What surprised me is how long the tail appeared. There is a little asterism of three stars above 37 Leo that pointed the way to ISON this morning. Russian Meteor Update

They found it!! Well- part/most of it - a 1200 pound hunk of meteor rock at the bottom of the lake. They hauled it up and its on land now. 1600 injur ed, severe damage to some buildings. The explosion overshadowed the Hiroshima bomb for effective power.
