I heard from someone a while back that some folks in Kanarraville don't think it's a big deal. I have spoken with someone from the Kanarraville city council. He took it seriously enough that he had the city hire a surveyor to check the horizons from where the centerline will pass through town. Happily he found the horizon in the direction of the eclipse is low enough to allow observers to see 1st, 2nd and 3rd contacts. Deloy Pierce sent me e-mail awhile ago concerning John Elwell, from WISE, who spoke at SLAS. Deloy had asked him if he would be interested in speaking at OAS and he indicated he would. So...Roger, if you have some contact information you can get to me I would like to set him up for a meeting. As long as I am here I might as well put out a feeler for anyone on the list that might have something of interest they would like to share with our group up north in Ogden. American Chemical Society meeting

Yours truly went to an ACS meeting in Denver last week. I attended two days of talks about the chemistry of the solar system mostly devoted to mars. NASA representatives were there and mentioned plans to send a sample return mission to Mars. One key point mentioned is that Mars has perchlorates in its soil. Perchlorates are good oxidizers. Solar Ecilipse Visable From St. George, Utah?

It's an annular solar eclipse, which means it is ``total'' in the sense that the Moon will cover the sun, but the Moon-Earth distance is such that the moon will appear smaller than the Sun and the moon will have a solar ``ring'' around it. Plan to have some eclipse glasses. The path crosses I-15 north of Saint George at Kanarraville, Utah. See Google Map at url: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2012May20Agoogle.html You can see the eclipse from St. George, but the Moon will be off-center. To see the perfect annular form, you need to drive north and be right on the center-like of the shadow's path. It is a once in a lifetime event (locally), so it is worth driving north. - Kurt
