I think Kannarraville might be a zoo. 2 or 3 thousand observers would be a mess in a town of only a few hundred. If you zoom in on the map in the NASA link and move west the center line follows the main road for about 20 miles just north of Enterprise. Deloy

learning the sky

I have to put my 2 cents in. Yes, the field of amateur astronomy is wide. There are many specialties. Some love one and not another. My wife's and mine was sharing it with the public. Public and school star parties were our favorite activities. We always had our car packed for camping and star parties. Whereever we camped we would walk around the campground an hour before dark inviting everyone to look through our telescopes. One night in Yellowstone we were camped in a forested area. We set up our 13" Dob on the road by our campsite. We were surrounded by trees. After we ran out of good objects overhead we would move the scope so it could line up on an object visible through a gap in the trees. We moved the scope several times. If we hadn't known the sky we would have been in trouble. A go to scope would have been useless after showing overhead objects. Deloy Pierce

Annular Solar Ecclipses

Hi Dave, Karen and I went to the annular ecclipse in 1994 in El Paso, Texas. We combined it with a trip to the Texas Star Party. We probably wouldn't have gone to either by itself but we were glad we went. Many SLAS members went just to the ecclipse and I never heard one say he regretted it. The "Ring of Fire" effect isn't as impressive as the corona but its well worth seeing! I can' imagine someone not going when it's so close. Deloy Pierce

Astro art

Some on this list know SLAS member Kelly Ricks who currently lives out of state (come on Utah Symphony, offer Kelly a job so she can come home. I se on her blog today that she's just created another Astro-art engraving. http://kellyricks.blogspot.com/ Kelly tells me she'd like to give it to SPOC if we can think of a place to put it. I think we can find a place. The current work is on a copper plate. But since she is in New York maybe her next should be on golden plate. :) patrick Sent from my iPad

ATM session report and next month's planned date/time

Just a quick report on the August 13th ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop (my garage): Charlie Green attended and after discussing his projects we both went to his home for a look at his observatories and other astro gear. He has quite a collection of telescopes and mirror making equipment. The next project he would like to work on is a long focal length 13" mirror. In an upcoming ATM session we will evaluate that mirror. If it looks good, he will be set, if not, we will know what to do to correct it. Charlie was also looking for a home for a mirror grinding machine and I happily provided one for it! Next session there will likely be people working on dew zappers, and observing chairs. As usual, any other projects that any of you might want to bring and work on are welcome. The next session will be on September 17th from 9:00 to noon. I can easily go longer if any of you want to keep working your projects.
