Happy metric day and 103P update

It's 10 10 2010. Happy Metric Day! In other news: Chuck and the Clear Sky Clock were right. It was pretty cloudy at sunset but cleared off nicely by 10 pm or so. Currently imaging Hartley 2. It seems to be showing a bit more tail. Also tried for it visually with the C-5. I think it was there but just barely. Does not help that the comet is currently hovering above the SLC glow. patrick

Low intensity LED light

Sorry for being late with a thread but just found my LED light. Google "Gerber Recon". It is a single LED flashlight with clear, red, blue and green rotating filters. Single AA cell. Minimal output but adequate to read star charts. Observers can do the "which color is best experiment". Steve

U-Haul astronomy / Von Daniken

I did a program at Bryce Canyon last evening and while en-route to Bryce yesterday I stopped for lunch in Beaver. When I came out of the restaurant I saw this U-Haul truck in the lot: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/UHAUL.JPG I checked their website and saw that they really do have a page on astronomy. On the way home this morning I listened to that Coast-To-Coast show that Steve mentioned here recently. The guest was Erich Von Daniken and one of the things he was talking about was 2012. I'm sure you'll all be relieved to hear that he says 23 December 2012 will not bring the end of the world. Rather he said that's when the aliens will return (I'm guessing they'll be coming to deliver a new calendar to the Mayans and to pick up Dave and take him home <g>). patrick BTW, the weather was spectacular at Bryce. Crystal clear skies, no wind, great seeing. Coming home to clouds and rain was a real let down...

Hartley 2

>From Hurricane: Hartley 2 very dim in 80X15s, much dimmer than M31. No core visible but some increase in density maybe in my imagination! M20 & M22 nice as was M13, Hartley 2 dimmer than these. A nice night with enjoyable temps. Snow in the high country above about 9000 feet. Steve

repair of CG5 mount

Hi folks, I'm looking for someone who can do repairs on CG5 mounts and hand controllers. Please let me know if you or someone you know is interested. I would be happy to pay a reasonable repair fee. I finally found the comet

Last night I decided to skip the baseball playoffs and hunt for Comet Hartley2. My friend Dave had his 16" LightBridge and his new William Optics Megrez 120 APO refractor set up in his front yard. I just brought my binoculars and a few Naglers and Radians. I first found the Double Cluster and moved the telescope north towards Casseopeia. The comet seemed to form an equilateral triangle with Delta and Epsilon Cass. It was faint but visible in the 16". I'm hoping tonight a get a bit more contrast since we will observe near Rockville tonight. This isn't the brightest comet I've observed but will make for an excellent photo opportunity tonight.
