You know Siegfried, it was slightly amusing the first time, but now it's just childish and tiresome frankly. Some of us face an hour's drive thru SLC traffic, and with gas at well over $2/gal, would honestly like to know if the trip up will be worth it or not. Or is this your way of saying that you're "winging it" again? I had an STV that I used with my Orion ST-80 for framing images (i.e. digital finder). It worked very well for displaying DSO's "better" than what you could see through the eyepiece of my 10 LX200. I sold that to finance a ST-7 to ST-8 upgrade, so I purchased a used Meade DSI. I've only had a couple chances to work with it - it seems to work very well for my purpose of framing images. It should work quite well for displaying the DSO's for your kids. It has a "live" image capability and also provides for image stacking. Camera for Live Views of DSO's

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I would love to get hold of an STV but I can't bring myself to spend that much. I noticed the Bryce one from a distance last year at the star party but stayed clear for fear of seeing, liking it and going out and buying it. The Meade looks interesting. Does it thro up a reasonable image on a laptop screen after a few seconds of integration? How does it compare with the AVA re sensitivity? I read the AVA review S&T Oct'04 when it came out and didn't go for it as I don't want to fuss with video. Is it possible to get the video output presented on a laptop screen? I never really followed that up. I have an old clunker 350Mhz which works fine with my 740 webcam at 5fps and would be happy if it could handle the AVA as well. Cheers David

I enjoy DSO's visually at dark sites with my little apo and mct but its hopeless in my backyard. The amount of light pollution (aka wasted energy) in Salt Lake City is almost against the national interest and certainly doesn't suggest a commitment to any kind of greenhouse gas reduction..... What can the group recommend as a camera for viewing DSO's live on a pc? I don't have the time to do any processing or get the kind of results Tyler is getting but would just like to be able to show my lad what a DSO looks like beyond a smudge. I'd like to store some results but do not want to muck about with video. Cheers David

Patrick, Don't you need a flip-mirror to find a guidestar with the ST-4? I mean isn't it harder to find a guidestar without one? I'm still a newbie to astrophotography.
