Let me start out by saying WOW, it seems that whenever there is a posting from CommWorks to the List it causes a volley of flames. The sad part is some feel that we at CommWorks don't care about the small ISPs. When we try to let you know about something happening for the TC1000 it is met with some strange comments. For those that don't go to the Total Service or CommWorks web site from time to time I post things to make you aware. I monitor this list just to keep myself aware of what's going on. Its great to see a community of Technical people helping each other out on USR-TC. I know that many people use this list because the have no other access to Technical Support. Some may not have a Contracts while others have no Warrantee because the bought used. My apologies for the disruptions that my postings seem to cause. To set some things straight: CommWorks is a wholly owned subsidiary of 3Com. 3Com sold off Palm and spun off the Courier and Sportster Modem division which bought the name US Robotics. 3Com and USR are not structured apart they are two different companies. CommWorks has no say in what other companies do on end user modems or any other product you sell to the end user. If you have complaints about software not doing something open a Service Ticket so its addressed. Posting or Complaining on the USR-TC list does not accomplish this. If its not resolved escalate it with us. If you don't need the ability to put 1,152 ports in one chassis using Mulit-Spans look at the TCS 4.7 release notes and decide if there is really any need to move past TCS 4.5 and the ER code for DSPs. If not then TCM is not an issue. TCM had a cost associated with it. It came with the bundles. CEM has a cost associated which is $1,000 list price for the entry level 1-5 element version. TCM was about $2,059 list price that would allow control of 1 element. Most ISP open several windows to view more. CEM has had an Evaluation Program going on for months. If you bought gear from Authorized Reseller you would have known this. Yes, you need a Support Contract to have access to download the Evaluation Software. About the Green. We are a business just as your ISP is a business. We help out customers just as you help out customers. One difference we have Partners that sell yearly contracts for Support and ISPs sell monthly access to the Internet. Let me know if you give out Free access to people that built your company. Changing to a another RAS vendor, As much as it would pain me to loose some of you as customers I realize that churn is part of the industry you deal with every day. I have traded out several Cisco, Lucent, (Ascend & Livingston) and even Patton boxes. I have even had people come back when the as you do when they find the other guy is not better but just different. There were comments from both bigger and smaller ISPs on there experiences with other vendors. I also sit on the user lists of my competition and see the negativity posted there too. Frankly some posts on the USR-TC list back in Feb/Mar when V92 was released stated they were trading out all there gear and 9 months later they still have the same comment. We are not perfect but strive to be. We create programs to help out the smaller ISPs with price. We offer Competitive Trade outs that gives you a way out of older technologies. how to config telnet authentication from tacas+

Hi all, We have TC1000 , HiperArc V4.2.32 , Our dialup access customers are authentication and accounting through RADIUS. We also have seperate tacas+ server , we are using it for telnet user's accounting and authentication of all my cisco routers and switches.....etc. I am doing telnet on HiperArc,, I want telnet user's authentication and accounting through tacas+ server. Is TC support tacas+ for telnet ?? If yes than please send me sample config or links for docs to configure it. Thanks pankaj

Novell Authentication Question

Hi Guys, have a customer asking me the following...any input?? Customer wrote: I have a 3com Total Control unit used for ISDN and 56k modem connections. We currently use Radius Authentication software (On an NT/Win 2000 Server) from Funk Software for user account access and admin etc. We would like to move to an integrated solution so that our Novell accounts will be able to grant access to authenticate these dialup or ISDN users. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. diabling routing between ports.

As Joel mentioned a while ago the HA will route between the two networks in the HA as any good router should. I was told that the same improvements in the TCS 4.7 DSP code would be the same as the TCS 4.5 x.107 code on DSPs. When the Release notes are ready the Engineer Release x.107 will be released as General Available. This would mean you don't need to request it, it would be posted for download. I don't have a date on that. <?xml version="1.0" ?> I just can't sit and watch a discussion without throwing in my opinion. I would agree with the statement "Stop trying to make them care..... treat them as the commodity (sp?) that they are and get on with business.". If you don't agree with a company's policy, normally you don't buy from them. And that's the thing I think 3Com is missing here. As far as the hardware, I've always believed in 3Com and USR and so I started my business with cheap, used Total Control hardware. My business is growing and eventually I'm going to want or need to expand and add new hardware. At some point in the not-too-distant future I'm going to buy new equipment rather than going to Ebay. I think the TC hardware is great and if they helped me out now the way other vendors do (with freely available software updates and such) I'd be buying new TC hardware. But that won't be the case. On the software - at a time when 50 different strangers were willing to freely provide me all the software I needed to keep my equipment up to date, I chose to buy the support contract for the sole purpose of doing it legally and making absolutely sure I had the latest software. Now, like many others, I feel cheated. I bought the software contract in good faith that I would have access to software updates, which just became useless without paying for CEM. It is a business, and it's not uncommon in specialty businesses for the provider to charge for software updates and support, and I could deal with the support. However, I feel it IS unreasonable to tell me I can have all the software I want for $1400 for a year, and then 5 months later tell me it's going to be another $1000 if I want to use the software. In that way, they've not only cheated themselves out of the potential ton of new hardware I will be buying over the next few years, but they've also cheated themselves, and their partners (Source-T, etc.) out of the additional service contracts. The problem is that if I shell out the $1000, what's to stop them from coming out with something new and wanting another $1000 next year? No thanks Mr. Gates, I'll be running Win2K until new hardware isn't compatible! To me this is all very disappointing because I do like the total control hardware. When starting my business, I consulted with several people about hardware. My telco wanted to provide me with Cisco hardware. Another ISP told me I was nuts to go with TC and how much better off I'd be with Ascend. I hate being wrong. I'm still dealing with the fact that my competitors, running on the same telco, with the same CT1 circuits, with older TC units with version 2 DSP code, consistantly get faster connections to any given subscriber on the same phone lines and same modems. One friend tells me that instead of spending $1000 for CEM, I should spend the $4000 for a MAX TNT box on Ebay and he guarantees me I'll get faster connections than anyone with a TC unit. In the computer sales business, I do a LOT of free service for my customers because I know that within 1-3 years they'll be back buying more. That's why they keep buying from me when I can't compete with Dell and Gateway. My only point is that they're missing the boat. They're handling this like the software support and sales are the last dime they'll get from me. That's a self-fulfilling policy. I was burned on a $60,000 CB9000 chassis which was end of lifed 6 months later.. and now I see it in the RAS arena. I've spent the $300/hour on tech support to a guy who could barely speak english. Tom, please don't sell try to sell this... not on this list... really. I do want to thank you for being here... on the list..though... it's one thing 3com/Usr/Commworks has to it's favor. We're glad you are here. But let's keep it real at the very least.
